 I found that about 06:30 this morning! Win 10 IS currently installing from ISO onto a third 1TB HDD... Then I can look at adding Chrome, SQL, VS, ... And my apps and data. Then yet another backup... :D

So far I did 3 "clean" installs of 10 from an ISO disc. Everything just worked for me.

You missed it there :-)...Microsoft clearly states, that Windows 10 is a service - no OS anymore. If you want OS you should look elsewhere... :-)

There is another usage of the word 'service' (as a verb, not a noun), but I'm not sure it is KSS.

It's not that bad - if you think of it as Win 8 SP2. But then being "better than Win 8" isn't exactly much of a milestone. It works, normally. And provided you don't want to do anything complicated (like tell it what to actually do) the it's OK, if ugly. But as soon as anything goes wrong it turns back into Win8.0 with DOS 2 error messages and "ease of use". :sigh: Trouble is that I support a few people, and if I don't run it then I can't check what they are saying and have to drive over to see them and work it out there.

I'm in that position as well...sooner or later one of my guys is going to either cave in and install it or get it on a new laptop, so I had to know my way around it anyway. I installed 'Destroy Windows Spying'...it's a composition of things like firewall rules and redirects in the HOSTS file to thwart Windows spying. One of the things it has is to turn off Windows Updates completely by Policy instead of just 'let me decide later'...so far, it's been working really well. I don't automatically install anybody's updates anymore...they've permanently broken my trust in their good will and intentions.

Windows10 updated yesterday - and was a PITA about it. Finally completed, I turned off for the night and relaxed. This morning though... No network. None whatsoever. My adapter doesn't even switch into gigabit mode... And win 10 is refusing to admit any connection exists, or to add a new one. Why do you do this Microsoft? Why do you make me hate windows10? And why is the new settings app so completely useless? Two hours, the reboots, and it *might* be ready to admit that my Ethernet network actually exists - not actually connect to it, no. But existence is a start...

Put all your password into passwordsafe (or a similar product) let it live in dropbox (or a similar service) synch it to your portable bits. Why do people who a religious about backups not do this to passowrds! :(

I installed Windows 10 the week it came out and had similar troubles with my laptop. The installation completely destroyed the entire network stack; no Internet no network connectivity. The fix was to rollback. Rolling back was very easy. The problem was that I have Cisco VPN software installed and after doing research, found that everyone else is having the same problem. To have a clean installation, users must first uninstall Cisco VPN software and then install Windows 10.

OK - it's not hardware. I've changed HDD to a spare I used for test restores before the Win10 "upgrade" and it boots Win7 with full networking(I may have mentioned that I like backups before?). So it's the latest MS Win10 update that has b*gg*r*d my system. And gawd, but I'd forgotten just how pretty Win7 was, how "together", how seamless. But...Windows 10 it must be, I guess. So I'll download the latest Win10 ISO on this, and reinstall for a clean setup on a third HDD. Maybe that'll "just work"...

It's interesting, isn't it? I get what they tried to do, but they do need to bring things back completely under a single paradigm. And this does *not* mean bringing them all under a dumbed-down paradigm. The number of times I have to hunt down the network property dialog to fix things that the lame-as Network settings page just can't handle drives me nuts.

I do tend to agree with you about the settings screens being terrible - but it's just a matter of using them more to get used to them I think (aside from the obvious missing functionality, of course!) I am stuck with Windows 7 at work and I must admit, I find the UI very outdated in general and don't find it a pleasant experience to use anymore, but I do like feeling like a power-user still: able to actually control my own windows experience. Dumbed-down would great if it could just sort everything out without me thinking about it. Windows X.13?

From Windows 10 November update: FAQ[^]... 1. "Windows 10 is a service" - I think you should install an OS first to run a service... 2. "If it’s been less than 31 days since you upgraded to Windows 10, you won’t get the November update right away; this will allow you to go back to your previous version of Windows" - obviously there is no going-back after this update. Don't even dream about 7...

I am sooooo glad I made a full system backup before allowing Windows 10 to do its wicked work. Having suffered the loss of my favourite applications because Win 10 spits them out and having suffered maxed out SSDs while updates are being installed while I am trying to get some work done, I blew Windows 10 away and reinstalled Windows 7 from the backup. I'm happy.

I may not last forever but the mess I leave behind certainly will.

Until MS completely turns its stance and gets back to WinXP/Win7 ways of developing OS or there won't be any feasable way of running new software over Win7 I won't change - exactly as I did for 98 first and XP then, jumping over 2k and Vista. The first one broke compatibility to every game and driver I had (no, I won't buy new hardware for an OS), the second... should I say? I jumped over Win8 and I hope to avoid 10. I'll be changing hardware soo though, and laptops are always one compatibility hell. I hope I won't be forced to install a "cured" Win7 ISO but I'm ready to do that if I must.

I got network - but VPN was totally screwed. I spent hours trying to make it work, but in the end the only thing that worked was to 'Refresh' aka reset Win10 to blank slate and reinstall all my apps.

Have you tried reinstalling from scratch/iso? I had a problem with the windows 10 upgrade once and downloaded the ISO at a relatives to be sure. I was right and it was a problem with the upgrade. P.S. As far as getting to IP settings did you right click the connection->network and sharing center? which shows a interface like the windows 7 one? I prefer that compared to the settings app non-sense. You have to use settings app for certain settings while most of the important ones are in network and sharing center.

In addition, the new visual studio ISO is so big that you might corrupt windows if you install incorrectly (at minimum a messed up registry and reinstall visual studio but worst case you need to reinstall windows). I was surprised how long the visual studio installation took.

My laptop upgraded without incident to Win10 Pro from Win8.1 Pro months ago. The November update, however, killed my WiFi connection and I had to restore to the earlier version to get it back. The November update actually put my cable modem into a coma and killed it for everyone, not just my laptop. Once back at my earlier version, I upgraded the WiFi adapter driver and the same thing happened, I lost my WiFi due to the cable modem going into a coma again. I haven't tried to apply the November update again and then rollback the WiFi driver yet. That's next. The moral of the story may be that the issue doesn't lay with Win10 itself, but the concomitant driver updates.

Similar thing for me on Thursday - dead network after install. Fortunately all I had to do was to manually install an ethernet adapter (updated from a few weeks back). As a pessimist I'm still waiting for things to be broken but not yet, oddly enough.

So, Yesterday, my daughter thinks she brook her Brand New Surface Book. The pen stopped working. The touch screen stopped working. Because I have 30+ years of computer experience, I suggest a full reboot. She complains that she rebooted JUST the day before. I suggest that she reboot, unless she does not need the Pen, or the touchscreen... But reboot early, reboot often, with a new Operating System, relatively new hardware. She rebooted, and found this update took FOREVER. She comes to me and says that she did not know it needed to install all of this. I suggested that "it knew", because it started breaking things to force the issue :-) [I am cynical enough to believe they may have done that on purpose!] A long time after the reboot (she opened an old laptop and started watching netflix), the computer finished, and all was good. BTW, we love the Surface Book. Great features... Windows 10... Not so much!
