That was an old car joke here in Italy, where almost everyone have manuals. "What's the best antitheft device in America?" "A manual gear" :D

You couldn't be more right. Carjackers foiled by manual transmission. And that's not the only one

I was watching the idiot box and saw adds for the new model cars go by, in a sort of half aware state, and a question popped up: Do we REALLY need tachometers in dashboards anymore? With 90% of new cars using automatic trannies, of what use is a tachometer? What could we put there instead?

Nope. It really happens. I drive a manual myself and I chuckle when I see these stories knowing that most crooks couldn't drive my car if they did want to steal it.

Well, when truly self driving cars become reality, all the gadgets will go away. The car will drive itself to the automated oil change shop at 2 AM when you're asleep, it'll pull in to the automated filling station when it's low on fuel, it'll always drive the speed limit, and if it detects engine problems, it'll find the nearest mechanic and "phone" in ahead of time to have a self-driving rental waiting for you. Then again, in four years, we may all be riding in horse and buggy carriages. Marc

Exactly. In fact, I never learned how to use a tachometer. I just listened. Simple.

I gauge speed based on engine RPM in a given gear. They do this is NASCAR as well, because they don't have speedos in their cars, and they have to obey pit road speed limits.

I have wondered about that. My automatic car has one, my five speed motorcycle does not... Next bike will though.

Many of the cars that have automatics also have a feature for optionally manually shifting gears. Tachs are still needed. Besides, real men can still row the gears on a manual transmission, and don't need that euro-trash paddle crap to "get all racey".

True. When I was doing 1/4 mile ETs (stripped down Nova hatchback), the tachy was the most important part, besides the engine :) But these days, I rarely look at the thing

honestly, my car is so quiet, if I didnt have a tach, I wouldn't realize that I shifted into 2nd(auto) half a mile ago and forgot to shift again. 4500rpm at 35... something isnt right...

Nope. Manual transmissions are only low single digits percentage of total sales here around the fringes. Most mainstream cars don't even have them as an option anymore. It's mostly bigger pickup trucks and higher end sports cars (most of the entry level ones are automatic these days); although if you try hard enough you can probably find a low end econobox with a manual. Manual transmissions not being available because no one knows how to drive one because there aren't any cars with manual transmissions available to learn on has become a self fulfilling prophesy here over the last few decades.

Ha! I prefer automatic now - driving is a bit of a chore these days, not a pleasure (apart form the odd jaunt up the coast or inland through the desert). After I stopped racing I got bored with having to change gears (albeit that was a long time ago). Wife still prefers manual - she reckons less chance of getting car-jacked as most yanks are baffled by gears. :-)

No one ever needed a tachometer - it's a boy's toy. Real drivers know when to change gear.

Tachometer does it measure tachyons? I'm going to guess its the gage that shows rpm and a quick google confirms this. I so deserve a beer tonight. I don't use mine very much even if I have an manual but I think its nice to have to help notice if something is starting to go wrong. My current car doesn't show engine temperature which I found quite annoying. Especially since the winter are cold it would be nice to know when the engine is up to the right temperature.

So does mine. It's still in the glove box in fact.

The car I bought for my daughter (college) has manual tranny. I know that she is the only one that drives it. The downside of this is that I cringe whenever I take the car in for dealer maintenance, tire change, car wash etc.

Many of the cars that have automatics also have a feature for optionally manually shifting gears. Tachs are still needed. Besides, real men can still row the gears on a manual transmission, and don't need that euro-trash paddle crap to "get all racey".

Preach it, brother! I hate automatic transmissions. My anemic 2002 Honda Civic is more fun to drive (5-speed stick) than my wife's 2013 Dodge Challenger (automatic).

Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason? Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. Right, and it's a damn shame!
