Speaking of cars, in the U.S., General Motors used to have a place called the Jobs Bank, before their bankruptcy. Back then, GM had much more capacity than demand; so entire shifts of people who had nothing to do would go to work at the Jobs Bank. I have heard of numbers in the 5000+ range. I believe all they were doing was sitting around and playing cards and watching TV. GM was not allowed to lay them off, because of union contracts. So I am lucky, though I forget it sometimes.

We had a similar situation in our motor manufacturing days. It was called "British Leyland". The night shift used to bring mattresses, apparently.

Turn signals, rear-view mirrors, headlights, ... the list goes on. My experience as a cyclist is that BMW drivers are asshats by choice, not by chance or innate talent.

Audis seem to attract a particularly stupid and careless class* of driver that might previously have driven a Beemer. *Yes, there are sensible and careful Audi drivers, but they do seem to be a _very_ small minority.
