I am glad I went through that before I had the responsibilities of a daytime job, bills, and possibly a family, etc. If I started drinking today I can see it causing a hell of a lot of problems while I found my place, and I am, by and large, fairly responsible. :omg: You've done your homework. Or was it a google? David Wulff ³ wrote: I hope you mean stupid for the USA? Yup. I have been drinking, at home or at friends houses for a number of years. I've been to town a couple of times but found it a bit shit considering the hype about it. I'd much prefer to go to a propper pub than these new fangled clubs. Too much hassle for expensive booze and crap music. However my 18th birthday is gonna be a CRACKER. On the 15th itself I intent going out and getting royally drunk with my closest compadrés. Then a few days later, I'll be holding the party of parties at the local cricket club. Again copious drinking and flirting. David Wulff ³ wrote: purchase of crossbows Woot! I've gotta get me one of those!

Yes that is what I had always been led to believe. Personally I feel the age of consent should be individually decided based on the emotional maturity of the child (or indeed adult as it should be in most cases). I do feel sorry for the few cases brought to court each year where a sixteen year old boy is charged with rape for having consenting sex with his fiften year and eleven month old gf/bf, but that said I can see why they have a fixed age in place. If not you could have emotionally mature six years olds having consenting sex with forty two year olds, and at that sort of age the whole power and identity issue could have serious affects on the child even if they are able to handle the emotional aspect. (I won't go into the physical inpracticalities, it was just an example, and that would be far too wierd for this time of night.) Besides which, can you imagine having to ask to see someone's "Sexual Passport" before you started flirting with them? That would be chaos, and there would be a black market for forgeries. :suss:

That in my eyes is wrong. Most are not emotionally mature in any way, they just WANT to be more mature. But they have no idea what they are letting themselves in for.

Personally I think it's bloody stupid. The age of consent, marriage, majority etc. should all be the same. If we think teenagers of 16 are adult enough to have sex or marry, we should trust them to drink, vote etc. at that age too. If not, the age of consent should be raised. Looking around at my age peers in some parts of the country, I wouldn't want them to breed, marry, drink, vote or drive at *any* age. Then again, I should have been allowed all of those aged twelve... :suss:

Drinking age is 18 here and 21 in the US. Now THATS stupid. :-) The Consent ages are stupid. At 16 one can: Have consentual sex and raise a family Get married (i don't know if this requires parental consent) Smoke Gamble (well buy lottery tickets) But we have to wait 2 years before we are considered adults :wtf:

Yes. If the age of majority is set right the majority will be adult enough to handle it. Personally, I think starting to drink is much less important (and requires much less responsibility) than making love, so why the hell the ages of consent is lower escapes me totally. For the record, I was 17 when I started drinking, and 20 when I made love for the first time. I'm glad it happened that way around.

Very true, although to anyone with any experience of life (i.e. older than 16!) their lack of maturity does tend to make them a bit obvious. Here's a thought to stir it a bit...girls mature faster than guys (don't ask me why) so why is the ask of consent the same for both sexes? ;P Anna :rose: Homepage | My life in tears "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch "Anna's just a sexy-looking lesbian tart" - A friend, trying to wind me up.
