Summoning - In Hollow Halls Beneath The Fells[^] Summoning, one of my favorite bands for the last 10+ years! I just stumbled upon a band who released a track on a 3-disc Summoning homage that was released last month. And that, of course, led me to Summoning. Only the vocals and their logo betray their black metal roots, I guess it will scare off some people. Everything they ever did was about Tolkien's Middle Earth by the way :D Too bad they aren't very productive... The last album is from 2013 and there is no indication of a new one coming soon :(

I'm a big fan too. My friend introduced me to the album Dol Guldur a few year ago, and I went from there. I think, on reflection, Oath Bound is my favourite album.

Wow, I did not expect to find a Summoning fan on CP! :D Oathbound was an awesome album. I think it perfected the style they used on Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame (which has lang been my favorite). Old Mornings Dawn was really more of the same. I also really love Stronghold even though (or because) it's a little different with the female singer. Minas Morgul and Dol Guldur are great albums as well, even though they're still a bit rough on the edges, Dagor Bragollach is probably my favorite Summoning song. The Nightshade Forests EP is quite alright and the Lost Tales EP is among my favorite Summoning work even though it's nothing like their other work. The only album I never really liked all that much is Lugburz.

Yeah! Really like my black metal and more ambient style of the genre. Your album assessment is pretty spot on. Lugburz is very hard to get into, which is why I've skipped over it quite a lot. As for my favourite songs, more of a toss up between Land of the Dead or Nightshade Forest (for sentimental reasons) Although the more I listen to of Pale White Morns and Darkened Eves the more it grows on me as a possible favourite. Do you have any other recommendations from other bands of the same genre?

Hmmm...After listening to a few minutes, I found their work yawningly unoriginal. Apologies for the dissenting opinion. ;) Marc

That's interesting as these guys invented a (sub-)genre! It's called "epic" black metal (although, as mentioned, the metal is now mostly gone). I wonder what you heard that you think is like this because I'd certainly like to listen to that too! :D

I have exactly one recommendation high quality band that sounds like Summoning (including the LOTR theme): Emyn Muil - Túrin Turambar Dagnir Glaurunga (Full Album) - YouTube[^]. Other bands that you may like if you like Summoning are Caladan Brood, Elffor and L'Ordre Du Temple, although they don't sound quite like Summoning they give off similar vibes :) But yeah, Summoning is pretty unique :)
