Assault weapons

Assault weapons need to be illegal, period. Let's at least start there. And no, it's not a slippery slope, at least I hope not.

There's just one slight problem with that assumption. How do you define a weapon as an assault weapon? It's a very general term. One way is to ban high capacity magazines. OK, what defines the capacity? I have a .22 rifle that has a 7 shot magazine; a varmint gun. Is it an assault weapon? The term assault weapon was coined by people who are ignorant of guns. An AR-15 is a .223 caliber weapon with high velocity. A .45 ACP carbine is a much larger round with a lower velocity. Which is more dangerous? Which would be deemed as an assault weapon? Is it automatic weapons or semi-automatic? AR-15's are semi-automatic. The bottom line is that anything, ie. baseball bat, can also be covered under the definition of assault weapon just like knives, hammers, and anything else you can attack someone with. You can't solve a problem by treating the system. You have to go to the source of the problem. What cause the shooter to kill all of those kids?
When you are dead, you won't even know that you are dead. It's a pain only felt by others. Same thing when you are stupid.

This feel like an attempt at avoiding the issue and muddying the water. It is very clear that some guns are only intended to kill other people. How about starting with that.

You can't seriously compare what happened in Florida recently with a baseball bat. :wtf:

So, you can inherit if you pass a check and pay the fairly low stamp fee/tax. Not without a hoop or two but certainly possible.

None of my local ranges allow fully automatic weapons fire.
I think Vegas is closer for you, but I've one about 30 minutes away in WI which allows it, even has a few for rent.
Passing the check for a class III weapon is more stringent - there's more paperwork to do, and the background check takes much longer. My point was that unlike non-Class III weapons, you can't simply inherit a machine gun without involving the government.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The 2nd amendment is specifically about military style weapons. You go hunting with a gun, you go to war with arms. And militias go to war not hunting. And tell me, what article of the constitution gives the federal government the power to regulate guns or arms? I'll tell you, THERE ISN'T ONE, and the 2nd amendment expressly prohibits it.

Then based on your argument we should be all stocking up on jets, tanks, and drones, not wimpy little assault rifles.

We had laws that allowed people to own guns. What's the difference? Oh right...constitutions can't be amended so the second amendment can't ever be undone

Not own guns... but rather bear arms. Consider the difference between a gun (sporting/hunting) and arms (military weapons). Just saying, you are redefining the Constitution for your own agenda and thinking that is not a slippery sloe. The same thing is being done with Freedom of Religion being redefined, and even Freedom of Speech - both of which are much more important to me. But I am not naive enough to think the whole issue isn't related.

No rather you are redefining it to yours. What was the difference when the Constitution was created? They were talking about the most up to date weapons that existed then. And that included the private ownership of cannons and gunships. Yes, Privateers Mattered | U.S. Naval Institute[^]

Go into a store that sells a large selection. Ask for a recommendation for an assault weapon that one can own legally. They will be more than happy to provide a large choice of options for you to considered. However that is only what they carry so you might want to shop around. Also buy some magazines. You should be able to find a number that either are specifically about assault weapons or carry articles on them.

It was expected by the framers. The government could (maybe still can?) issue Letters of Marque to civilian owners of vessels, authorizing them to fight the enemy. The civilians were expected to already have, or get, all the materiel neccesary: cannons, powder, ammunition, etc. So, yeah, "military" arms in civilian hands was a thing until recently.

How many tanks do you have? What about stealth bombers? Can I borrow one?

Stealth is way too expensive for me, as are tanks. Other people do have tanks, though. :p

Didn't you say "...constitutions can't be amended so the second amendment can't ever be undone" or are you referring to a different post (where you are agreeing with John)?
