Yeah, and they are over-hyped for the reasons of safety and preparedness. Going the other way results in more people dying from these events. Seriously, go read a book about hurricane deaths and forecasting.

I suggest that if the residents hadn't thought 'oh, it isnt so bad after all' when the media hype fizzled away they would be better prepared for the flooding. It is very easy to breed complacency with fake news. Complacency kills. I take it you have heard the phrase, crying wolf?

Turns out they have recieved over 30 inches of rain in some places. (Swansboro, N.C.) And guess what, it's usually not the wind that kills. And BTW, you should probably keep posting in the soapbox.

meteorologists were predicting those rainfall totals as early as last Monday. and they were right on. and the widespread evacuation orders, based on those accurate predictions, likely saved many lives.

Have some acquaintances up in Charlotte, who are doing fine, so I've been checking out weather.gov and I have to say I'm amazed at the level of detail available. Turns out there are a lot of records for flood levels that has gotten broken. With many not reported while the equipment has broken, due to the flooding. My country don't have catastrophes, if a thing like that happened here we would get pushed back a century.

Fake news is utter lies and bullshit. "Crying wolf" is also a bad analogy as the forecasts and warning goes out days ahead of time based on the information available at the time. When evac orders were issued, the hurricane was forecast to come ashore as a Cat 4. There was no indication of anything affecting the strength of the system at the time. Only after people were being evacuated did more information come to light that affected the forecast and reduced the hurricanes strength. That's the problem with people who call out, "oh this is just another Cry Wolf". Those people don't think about when evac orders are issued, they are BASED ON ALL INFORMATION AVAILABLE AT THE TIME. So, yeah, to you, it's "crying wolf". To me, it's "better safe than sorry". Or have you not heard of that one?

Your post is very informative in several ways. 1 - the link showed me the type of source you rely upon for your world view 2 - Comment like this show a disregard for humanity[^] . . . omit rant - fill in for yourself . . . Basically, you need to find yourself in the middle of a tragedy.   Although a bit of a leap of faith, perhaps that will allow you to get your head on straight. Mdm. Guillotine, however, is more likely to succeed in tough case like yours.

Right, now it is in the soapbox I can reply properly. My statement, storms kill, is in agreement with Ryans statement that this storm is still dangerous. Yet you chose to claim the moral high ground, as did Losinger, by pretending I meant something else. And the reason you did this, as did Losinger, is because I hold a different view of CAGW than you. You are as obvious as the nose on your face sonny.

Right, now it is in the soapbox I can reply. Man is making CO2. CO2 is causing warming. Got that? However there is no long term clear increase in water vapour. Hence the amplification process used in climate models is absent. This means the small warming from CO2 alone, 1 C in a dry atmosphere (and it isnt) is all we will get from taking it to 540 ppm. Got that? It is that simple. Really. Now, what do you not understand about my position on this, and the basic facts?

Turns out it was barely a hurricane: Hurricane Florence, Culmination of Exploitation of Natural Events by Government, Extremists, and Business | Watts Up With That?[^] "By Wednesday evening they already downgraded Florence from a Category 4 to a Category 2, and it came ashore barely as a Category 1. In fact, it was amusing to see how long they continued to report it with wind speeds of 75 mph because if it was 74 mph, it was no longer a hurricane. NOAA control the wind speed determinations with their estimates from one or two flights above the hurricane from which, using models they estimate surface speed. We know these are consistently higher than reality, but a higher speed allows for a higher hurricane category and greater media attention."

Read WUWT, the reason it diminished was cold water and the flattening out due to the lower tropopause.

So in calling a hurricane a flop (Florence, Flop? Alliteration? (never mind, :sigh: ) ) I have no respect for humanity (which was your original accusation). Yeah, sure. I know why you chose to interpret it the way you did, it is clear as daylight. You really don't think it is obvious that the people here who most detest my posting about GW are those who tried to take the moral high ground by using the death of people in this storm? A thing in itself quite shameful.

lemme just point out that the rainfall predictions were correct. and rain is always the most devastating factor, in this part of the world. the land is low and flat and prone to flooding. the rainfall predictions were correct, so many people who live in the low/flat areas got out of there in time. and they're still out - we have several friends in the Wilmington area who haven't been home since last Thursday. they don't even know if their houses are still standing. but they aren't drowned in brown water! good thing they don't listen to sociopathic trolls like MM here.

I've got a close friend who has family in Wilmington and Raleigh. They all got out under evac orders and haven't been able to return yet.

As a North Carolinian: fuck off As a member of the Guard who sees first hand the people affected by this: fuck off Whether this is the result of some political talking point or not, your attitude is grotesque. We were evacuating people several days in advance and, based on the damage caused by the storm, that fact saved a LOT of lives. If the media hadn't been very clear about the potential rainfall and storm damage most of those people wouldn't have budged. The simple fact is that the media saved lives this time.

Please, just effin' stop this shit. It is bad enough dealing with family members who want to espouse vitriol and hatred over politics and religion, including their denial of global warming. Coming here and seeing you do the same gets quite old.

Hey, it's the soapbox. Don't want to see it? Don't come here. Simples. Me, I think it's hilarious.
