On Monday morning, while reading this[^] discussion I snapped, and responded to a code sample in the discussion in a manner that was blatantly mean and uncalled for, and for that, I apologize to the community as a whole and member georani[^] in particular. I greatly enjoy CodeProject, and my post did not uphold the standards of this community. Again, my apologies.

:) Long back there was a guy called "Osmo" who wrote his own language & compiler (Plain English compiler) and wanted everyone to follow him. This is sounding similar. I guess Georani could be the son of.. creator of this historic tragedy called VB.

A long time ago I worked in interpreted BASIC, then QuickBasic, then a variant of BASIC called Metropolis (used in Alpha-Micro minis), FoxPro and a few other languages, and then I discovered C# and never looked back. I've always looked at programming language discussions wars like this: If you enjoy programming in language XYZ, have at it! If you can make a living working in it, even better! Just please don't try to ram your preferred language down my throat. Sorta like the old tabs vs spaces battle... :-D

VB6 makes sense and I'm one of the people who'd like a VB7. VB.NET has no reason to exist since it's a more verbose C#, with the same toolset as C# but with some missing limb.

I worked with VB.NET before I worked with C# and I kind of think that it does deserve a fair portion of the hate that it gets. On the rare occasions that I have to revisit it, I find it excruciating. There's something about "IIF" (eeeeeefffff?) in particular that makes me want to die. And in any case, any language that is littered with the word "Dim" is fundamentally self descriptive. Sander's charitable attitude towards VB is obviously rooted in nostalgia and can be forgiven but it boils down to a simple case of C# == good, VB = rank - there's no need for the jury to retire on this one. And yes, it would be nice if people didn't get so damned opinionated about languages! :)

After reading the other replies you made, it looks like you were in a bad mood of sorts? Anyhow, it probably will not be the last time you vent like that. I have been warned many times in the last 11+ years here that I am acting like an asshole, and need to stop. Recently I was threatened with a temporary ban after pooping all over the Soapbox. That was a wake up call. Cheers. :)

                                        Sincerely, -Mark mamiller@rhsnet.org

Meh...I've seen worse, but its nice to see someone be self-aware for a change. In fairness, the initial proposition was silly (and oft-repeated). Languages are simply tools. My current favorite is C#, but that changes easily, depending on the size of the paycheck :)

Cheers. :)

Very perceptive - didn't feel like a bad mood, but it was Monday morning after a wonderful weekend with family...
