How about my "old" father then who is 90% blind? You know what I meant; I didn't think it necessary for a whole song and dance. In any event, I had another ("farm-type") "older relative" get ripped off by the "infected pc script" site who should have contacted me first. Her "farm-type" nephew could have fixed it too. Or is farm-type a problem for you too? Oh, and I'm probably older than you.

My PC rebooted during the night for another Windows 10 update. This time, it also started playing a Netflix in the background. Thinking to put it back to sleep, it now says I MUST create a pin # BEFORE I can sign in. I'm now being RANSOMED by Microsoft. I have only ONE pin. I've had it for forever, and I'm NOT going to use it on my computer (like probably most of the population will). So there you have it. MS now has most people's bank pin numbers; or at least they've forced people to unconsciously expose themselves to more financial risk. The arrogant stupidity of it all. On top of it, Microsoft will tell you if your pin is "too easy"?! On top of that, the "pin procedure" failed (I nearly sh*t myself), but we can "retry" at a later date. All Windows updates are now "paused" by me. Note: I can't stop them.

MS account. Nothing has varied from my sigin / sleep procedures. No setting changes. Nada. This was triggered by their update. While in sleep mode.

PIN only happens on MS Accounts. You may have been lucky till now.

Although it's overkill for most people, if you have other needs for it anyway, then WSUS is the way to go if you're trying to have the final say on OS updates. And that covers *all* versions of Windows. Not a single update can slip through without you (a) asking for it and (b) approving it. *IF* you configure it right (which is pretty trivial).
Or just turn off the update service.

Not that I've ever tried this, but wouldn't the OS start popping up warning messages incessantly? At least with WSUS, you don't have to turn off Windows Update on the clients...

Interesting. So you can turn off WU without a single warning, yet if you dare turn off the firewall, OMG, the sky's falling...even though you're sitting behind a router that does a much better job than the Windows Firewall could ever wish to be capable of doing. Or the AV.

Why the fuss? I have one pin to sign in to Windows, and different pins for my bank and credit cards.
It wouldn't let me sign in without setting one up. Why do I object to someone "putting a lock on my own house"? Or consider this: it wanted a new pin without me signing in ... in which case, "whose" pin is it? No explanation, no "cancel" ... just a loop. I have yet to make any sense of it ...

Assuming this is the same update that I applied to another PC here about an hour ago. It is restarting again for at least the 5th time...just watching the spinning dots for now at 75%....must be a major update. :sigh: It did give me the choice to put it off, but I had no idea it was going to take this long.

Working on a project that involve many components (code, images, text files, etc.). It's nice being able to come back to a session in that case.

You must have a monster machine to run multiple copies of VS, Remote desktop, Visio, Netflix, Edge, FireFox, Paint.Net, Picture Viewer, Snippet, PDF Reader, Age of Empires, 3 monitors, .... in a VM.
