Does anyone agree with me that Nike is really run by a bunch of assholes? If these[^] assail anyone's sensibilities about the era of slavery in US History then I have one additional suggestion for Nike and all those who revel in finding offense everywhere: don't y'all wear no cotton as it may remind you of dem ol' cotton fields a-back home. Apologies to other assholes for dragging them into this mess.

I’d say it a reasonable decision for Nike to avoid corporate associations with neo-Nazis

Before the oath, Trump has managed to surpass 2nd term Nixon for paranoia, 2nd term Reagan for corruption & 2nd term Bush for incompetence.--R. Schooley Frank Wilhoit: “Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition …There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.” The president fired the FBI director to obstruct a federal investigation into possible collusion with a foreign power to fix an election. - Jesse Berne

Hopefully, you're being cynical. Else, by that type of logic, the appearance of rainbows in the sky can be associated with deity's method of saying that everyone should be homosexual.

Nope. Neo-Nazis have co-opted the flag and during a time of growing racist white nationalism, Nike made a smart decision

Co-opted because you let them.   A victory you cede them by surrendering an asset, basically, without a fight. What will you surrender next, and to whom? As for the base logic for Nike's decision as demanded by Kapernick:  we can apply it to, for example, one-dollar bills as Washington was a slave owner. Also, get rid of the Bill-of-Rights. Obviously from the slave era and Madison, the author, family had 5000 slaves. Get rid of that shit! More so because neo-nazi groups use some of the freedoms and amendments to justify their behavior and publications.

How does one “let them”? They are using it that is a simple fact. Ignoring it won’t make that poison go away. Getting rid of the bill of rights because authoritarians use it to their advantage is no reason to become authoritarian oneself.

Here's a point many, perhaps yourself, don't seem to grasp: You do not set the limits on how things are interpreted and the consequences of the interpretations. You may like to - argue your points and justify them to your own certain satisfaction. Nonetheless - the reality is that the only bounds wherein that will apply is between your ears and behind your eyes. Others will agree, as others will oppose - and most won't give a flying fuck. There are consequences to giving up symbols - a flag that was the first (since biblical times, at least) of a nation extracting itself from an empire. That flag stands for the demand, struggle, and ultimate success of people's self determination. Until, in your mind, you allow it to be perverted.   Well - as it turns out - virtually no one has your opinion of the symbolism of that flag. The pity, then, lies upon those who accept the plans of just a few other upon themselves.

It's not up to me or Nike to allow or disallow perversion of symbols. The creator of Pepe the Frog didn't "allow" his cartoon character to be perverted. That was done without his permission. If Nike doesn't want to take the chance that their shoes will end up as the footwear of choice at neo-Nazi rallies then more power to them.

In fact, you agree that they should be. The Betsy Ross Flag is now a Nazi symbol to you - you accept it because Kapernick, who's last his 15 minutes of fame, is trying to get it back. Your acceptance of his reasoning is DE FACTO, destruction of the flag as a symbol of a revolution for freedom. As for the Bill of Rights - between the fact that it existed during an era of slavery and was written by a slave owner - I just follow the reasoning you have embraced. As in my previous post - interpretations by the world-at-large are not limited by the ones you pick and choose. The precedent is set - and now the fear that will follow will allow the public-facing-bullies on the right and left to destroy those remaining things that had linked us as a nation (even in the present political atmosphere). In fact - by definition - since I have made the extrapolation(s) above there's no reason to think someone else - with a bigger public platform - will not do the same (like that Ocasio-Cortez bitch).

Nor are they limited to yours. Claiming we must destroy the bill of rights is your thinking and unlikely that many will agree with your reasoning.

From the style of your answers, it appears you have found now answers - thus the possibility of an epiphany for you ! Just re-read the parts about the world cares hardly a dried shit about what either of us think but those given a platform from which to shout will find followers. For, example, in this case, Kapernick found you. Now just start to give it a good hard think, as explained by this[^], and determine where you let the wind blow.

People get offended so easily nowadays. Nike does not want to produce the shoes. So what? It is a free country, no?

Nike's doing what they perceive will earn them the most money. That part of "free country" cannot be denied. However, consider, also, the cultural statement they make and your original premise

is now going to be the controlling factor of . . . everything? Apparently, however, some are allowed to offend all they want without consequences (Cortez, Omar, Tlaib, for examples). I guess it depends upon just who you offend. Some things never change (and that's the pity of it).

I am surprised no one was offended that the US flag was on a shoe. Does not that go against the flag code?

That type of stuff was overturned way back in the Vietnam era - making flags into clothing and such, for example. Free speech. The right wanted to limit it, the left wanted to abuse it. My take, as anecdote: A 'right-leaning' person was commenting "what do people in these communist countries think when they see an American burning an American flag?". My answer? They think "what a wonderful country where you can do such a thing and not be arrested and jailed."
