I'm beginning to regret reminding him - I've got nothing useful.

I was on this path: Weight? To regain == definition
I ate = I ATE
dementedly = (anagram)
once the bar opened = ??
Right or Wrong, I couldn't figure a 9 letter word this direction. I left.

Weight? To regain it, I ate dementedly once the bar opened (9)

The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.I don't remember the last time I saw one of these here. When it's hiding in plain sight, there has to be a little misdirection. :)
Weight? To regain it, I ate dementedly once the bar
^^ ^^ ^ ^^^ ^
opened (def)INITIATED
I think @Rich-Leyshon had it but just didn't see the definition, so I'm inclined to give it to him, especially as I don't recall him setting one. Want to take it tomorrow, Rich?

The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.:~ I still don't get it... what about rest of the words/characters. I understand it's combination of few letters as-is but how does one reach to it?

The rest of it (by my understanding) doesn't matter when the word appears as consecutive letters within the clue, so long as the definition is still at either end.

The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.Yes, that's what I had but didn't understand why! I am losing track of days but isn't tomorrow Saturday? Alas, Monday morning I have a hospital appointment so won't be able to (that and the fact that the prospect of doing my first one terrifies the hell out of me!)

Right, tomorrow's Saturday! I watched my first one, so ask if you can!

I hope it is not serious... I had a something in my jaw 10 years ago and I had to "eat" liquids for 2,5 weeks and then baby food for almost 2 months before I could masticate properly again X| X| X|
M.D.V. ;) If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about? Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.

In looking into it further, I learned that there should nonetheless have been an indicator that hinted at the word being embedded within the clue, which was therefore unfair.

Part regain it I ate dementedly opened (9) - would be a more traditional clue

Where does the weight bit figure ?

It doesn't, other than to compose something that makes sense.
