Laptop display size "survey"

So, my current laptop is 3.5 years old, and although I am confident in it, I received a "computer porn" email from my supplier. By that phrase I mean, "omg, the new version is gorgeous! Choice of processors (high end intel or amd), I'll certainly beef up the storage and RAM on my own, spec'd with an NVidia 3080... drool. Okay so this would be for a mainly development laptop. I normally stick with the 15.6" displays. They fit in my laptop backpack and seem to be in the sweet spot. But this new puppy comes with a 17.3" display at 2560x1440 with an nvidia 3080 GPU. :omg: So, for those of you who develop on laptops - insights and opinions into 15.6 vs. 17.3?

I like 15 inch because 17 won't fit in a backpack very easily.

...and how are you enjoying that screendoor effect? :-) Or is that 4K? I have a 40" 4K TV as my primary display, and at its native resolution, text is smaller on it than it is on my 27" 1080p monitor. For the equivalent text size (without rescaling), 4K would have to be spread across 54". So presumably you're right at the sweet spot.

I don't see well enough for it to impact me i guess. Either that or this TV is just good about it, or I've gotten so used to it I just don't notice. It's only 1080p

I prefer a lighter laptop for travel, so I have one with a 14" screen. At home and at work, I connect it to multiple screens, so the laptop size is irrelevant. If you travel a lot and work on the plane, you may wish to consider a 14" laptop; anything larger doesn't fit onto the @#$% tables they provide in economy.

My "lappie" is a Surface Go 2 - so a 10.5" screen, and an Artech Bluetooth KB that attached via magnets. VS2019 does run on it, as does SSMS and Office - but it's not really a "development machine" more a "quick tester", data monitoring, and surfing machine. Recently found it works fine for Teams as well, even via WiFi to 4G via my phone. But ... it's very, very portable and the battery is OK. Much easier to lug around than a 17" "full lappie"!

Microsoft are 'replacing' my Surface Pro 3 .. the batteries heated up and expanded and pushed the bottom cover off the keyboard (no screws, just glued) - apparently it's a 'known issue' (that they failed to notify me about before the extended warrantee/fix period expired) It's a good machine in a lot of respects - so right now whether it's a 'safety' issue or not, it runs VS2019, WSL etc, and I need it for some contracting .. not sure if I'd make the same decision again though, similarly, finding a Dell or Lenovo I'd like is hard

17" is not a laptop, it's a foldable desktop. Better get a docking station and a pair of proper monitors instead. 14" is light enough to always bring around, and large enough to read.

Mine had a charger circuit failure: the charger light came on, but the unit just refused to take electricity - tried with two different chargers (Herself had a Pro 3 as well) but same result. Unfortunately, when I noticed it was already below 5% and now it's a brick. :sigh:

high end AMD or Intel processor, starts at 32GB RAM, NVME ssd, 4k 17" 144hz display.... yeah, the specs are nice. What got my attention was the NVidia GPU option and the resolution of the screen... it's a tool, but I was more curious about opinions of the screen size.

My personal laptop is 15.6, the one my employer provided is 17.3 At the end of the day, I'm comfortable with both, my major complaint is that I actually care less about horizontal width than I do about vertical height. I wish they didn't make them so damn short. I like to see lots of lines of code, lots of lines of documentation, etc. Yeah, there's the "turn it on edge" option, but if the lappy is the only device I'm using, that's rather impracticable. Wish they didn't all have to conform with "watching movies" standards. :(

One doesn't develop on a laptop. Get a desktop. Laptops are expensive for the power they pack in a limited space. Desktops are cheap. Get a cheap second hand-laptop to remote-desktop into your desktop. Not joking. A desktop gives you more bang for yer buck. Doesn't require a monitor either, just remote desktop. Get a decent system, not a glorified tab.

"One doesn't develop on a laptop." Going to have to disagree here. If your screen is 13 or 14" I might agree, but as Marc mentioned above, clear screens, readable code is everything. Besides, I've been using a laptop with high resolution displays for 15+ years successfully. Please expand on your comment, I'm genuinely interested. That said, times are changing. I've been trying for a couple of years (just been too busy) to migrate to all virtual machines. So the comment about "desktops" which really should not be called that since mine is sitting next to my desk - ha! Next-tops! is a valid point. I will not argue that you get far more bang for the buck. In fact, that is such an excellent point I might just build another machine for the lab. One note about the remote desktop approach - this *all* depends on the quality of your network and the security protocols of a particular customer. I have one customer that will only use the POS TeamViewer. Another customer uses a VPN but their network support is less than stellar. YMMV
