Microsoft competing with Code Project? Bye, bye CP

http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=12200&category=main[^] There is an article I saw in Slashdot about Microsoft competing with SourceForge. I took a step further and saw CP in the crosshairs. How long do you think CP has left? Thanks, Wes
Of all the things MS is thet are not stupid. Competing with CP in effect would have an adverse affect on other MS operations. If anything CP enhaces the MS product range and future. Regardz Colin J Davies

Why would MS wanna kill CP? MS must have had at least an extra 5000-10000 VS.NET sales because people bought copies after seeing articles on it from CP. Saying that MS would wanna kill CP is like saying the Pope wants to kill religion. As far as I understand MS would probably try and push CP as much as possible. Nish

Can you imagine the shocked :wtf:  expression in Chris's face, when the recent surge in CP traffic nosedives as traffic moves by the boatload to MS's Workspace, and his life's work X| vanishes in a matter of months, all the while he was supporting Microsoft, his chief competitor. Heh, I went to http://www.gotdotnet.com/, and one of the first things that caught my eye was the bright orange advertisement for CodeProject.

Wesner Moise wrote: How long do you think CP has left? A long, long, long time. As I'm sure you know, Chris and I are in very close contact with Microsoft across a wide array of subjects, and certainly we know and speak with the folks at GotDotNet, asp.net, and MSDN all the time. We've got a pretty good idea what their objectives are, and I don't think we've seen anything in them that's openly competitive with CodeProject. The issue with Sourceforge is that you can only host opensource projects, as in those falling into the standard opensource licensing agreements. Microsoft wanted developers to have more lattitude about the types of projects that could be hosted, and so GotDotNet Workspaces was born. Also. Competition isn't a bad thing. Many people think that exclusivity in a category is a desired thing, and usually it isn't. Nothing excites the interest of the public more than a good fight between competitors. It draws their attention, it interests them in the category, it encourages them to participate. I'd go as far as to say that if you don't have competition, your business model hasn't been validated. Without competition, you may not have a real market. Don't worry we're up for a little competition :-D David

Wesner Moise wrote: There is an article I saw in Slashdot about Microsoft competing with SourceForge. I took a step further and saw CP in the crosshairs. How long do you think CP has left? SourceForge hosts and encourages OpenSource projects that perform tasks that mimic and therefore potentially replace Microsoft products. Code Project on the other hand encourages the use of Microsoft technology. I also believe Microsoft in someway sponsors Code Project, so I think it will last for quite a while without being in Microsoft's crosshairs. Agreed, they are more complementary than competitive. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

Microsoft's workspaces are very different to what we offer at CodeProject. Did GotDotNet spell the end of community resource sites? Did Workspaces spell the end of SourceFord? We are't concerned in the slightest. cheers, Chris Maunder

Not likely! Without CP, Microsoft would have a much harder time selling its products. CodeProject provides the tech support that MS should have been providing for the past 10 years.
