California and Illinois are financial (and political) messes. There is no denying that. Neither is on course to correct their issues but… Do yourself a favor and Google for a list of US states whose citizens pay more in federal taxes than their states receive back from the feds. California and Illinois have been in the top 5 for decades and decades. In other words… other states routinely have been taking their money for 40+ years. Think of this as simple payback.

In my part of Minnesota, we had temperatures consistently around -25 C, strong winds, and snow for several days. The main hazards were poor visibility on highways, disrupted air travel, and a risk to exposed skin. Also repeated exposure to "the sky is falling" weather hype.

When people have to qualify history with extra adjectives I generally tune out. History is history. When people start claiming they have the one legitimate take it usually means they're running a con. Thomas Jefferson raped one of his slaves over the course of years. Claimed he was in love with her. They were sociopaths.

Well, most of us call it winter and a bad storm. If you are the weather media, it becomes a "bomb cyclone", super hyped to drive up viewers, etc. And, what I find utterly absurd and sadly hilarious, the governor of New York has called the President to ask for a disaster declaration for federal funds. New York, you are welcome said the developer in Georgia. How a northern state has the hubris to declare a disaster from a snow storm baffles me.

This. I was listening to [No Agenda](http://www.noagendashow.com) yesterday, a podcast that "deconstructs the news", and they played back some sound bites where one reporter was still calling this a "bomb cyclone" right after interviewing a meteorologist who defined what was needed to declare it as such (blah-blah-atmospheric pressure, blah-blah-needs-X-millibars, and this doesn't qualify at all). IOW, he was contradicting himself and kept using the name, just because it just sounds oh-so much more horrible and attention-grabbing... Okay honey, that's not even relevant. Roads are the general welfare, etc. A slush fund for states to debit is not. At some point it has to end. If a state allows development on the coasts that are KNOWN to have hurricanes, they should live with it. No federal trough for them. Live in a northern state - deal with the snow. The alternative is that the federal government will be petitioned out the wazoo for every bad decision made my state law makers. Our form of government cannot exist with that mentality. Sooner or later, the thought process trickles down to Venezuela level economics. We don't want to go there. I stand by my statement - New Yorkers, if you keep electing people who cannot manage dealing with winter, it's on you.

I suppose it's the same hubris that gets southern states to ask for Federal funds for hurricanes. In 1794, James Madison wrote disapprovingly of a $15,000 appropriation for French refugees: [1]

absolutely. "Welfare" - the act of the federal government taking money from one (taxes) and giving to another - was regularly disavowed by the supreme court - until Roosevelt packed the court. government is NOT your savior. In the area I live, one of the local counties has a 20 minute 911 response time yet some of the highest taxes in the state. We're not talking police, we're talking FIRE. People called the local fire station only to be told to call 911. Meanwhile in other news, our "enlightened government passed a bill for 1.7 trillion" - making yet another year that Congress has not passed a budget.

Okay, clearly we're not going to have a real discussion here... I have to laugh that we've only discovered the faults of the founders in the last 10 years. Hmmm, makes you want to think if someone has an agenda. Remember, democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on lunch. A republic grants rights to the sheep. no politics in the forum. Off to work on cars.

Dave Kreskowiakabsolutely not - but that is the LOCAL level. For a state to go the the feds for other state' s money - yeah, it's a problem. Suppose my state doesn't fund properly because I know I can go for disaster relief? Stay in context.
