Google search is dead

Not sure what you were searching for, but I have had no problems. I typically use duckduckgo, my search engine of choice because they claim minimal tracking. But after your description of an issue, I searched for self rising flour (pretty specific). Google search worked just fine.

Sure. But try a search where you want narrow the results to specific terms. Say, something like: Pixel 6 Pro hardware diagrams You'll get diagrams for every pixel ever made. Yes, the p6p is in there but if I'm only interested in the p6p why make me wade thru the dreck if I told it to filter it out? It used to work much better - by which I mean - it doesn't work at all now.

long live Google search. /s They have finally managed to make verbatim search unusable. Fuck all the executives with their fingers in that decision. (They probably did this months ago, but today was the first time I've had reason to try finding something specific. Now impossible.)

Gave a search string in my language Kannada, and Google search worked just fine.

Are you talking about the option behind the Tools button? By default, it's "All results". Click on that and you can switch to "Verbatim".

I was trying to remember the ARM project Microsoft cancelled. 'Microsoft cancelled ARM' would have brought it up quickly with the old verbatim search. Not with the new algorithm. DuckDuckGo has never been as good as the old verbatim search was. I tried it multiple times and gave up on it. Now they all suck.

Perform a search, .e.g self rising floor Under the search bar and above the results I see a row of ovals that are filters. Like images, recipes, etc. Scroll that list of filters to the left and on the far right, the last entry will be tools. You may need to select the "all" filter before it appears.

You get it on the results page, to the right of "Images, Shopping, Videos, News, Maps, ...".

understood. sometimes its better than nothing. Given Microsoft's reach, search results of its activities may be tainted.

It has nothing to do with Microsoft's reach. It has everything to do with correlating search terms to results. Google no longer does that well.

There's always Bing 🤣

I read recently that Duck Duck Go is doing the same - removing the advanced search operators. I didn’t use them often, but knowing I could subtract (-) a term from results, or force inclusion (+) was nice. Oh well, I’m old. What do I know.

They have definitely removed the effectiveness of + sign. It used to be +a +b +c would only return pages with all 3. Now top hits will include pages missing some of the keywords.
That has been a frustration for me for many years. Search has been getting squishier. Search for exactly what is in the quotes please, not something similar. When I excluse a word or phrase with -, I mean it. When I include a word or phrase with +, I mean it. I know it may result in limited results, that is why I'm using the feature. And Microsoft, when I use search on my computer, don't go poking the Internet. If I wanted that I would have opened a broswer! Now get off of my lawn!

Google search is on a trajectory to irrelevancy that there won’t be a graph steep enough to depict the decline. I posed your question verbatim to ChatGPT.
What was the ARM project that Microsoft canceled?
Quote:
The ARM project that Microsoft canceled was reportedly an effort to develop a version of Windows 10 that would run on ARM-based processors. The project, codenamed "Windows 10 on ARM" or "WoA", was initially announced in December 2016, with the first devices running the operating system released in 2018. However, in mid-2020, Microsoft confirmed that it was no longer planning to develop new versions of Windows 10 for ARM-based devices, and would instead focus on improving performance and compatibility for the existing version of Windows 10 on ARM. The company did not provide a specific reason for the cancellation of the project, but some reports suggest that it may have been due to poor performance and compatibility issues with certain applications.
