          Explanation: Shrink

          against CON
          major passage TRACT

CONTRACT My elder brother and his then wife were very religious (he later became a vicar until he was defrocked) and when I went to visit them as I left I stopped on the door mat and emptied all the tracts she had stuffed into my jacket pockets out on the floor ...

I thought of "CONTRACT", but could not fit the "TRACT" :)

I thought of CONTRACT but the clue stated the answer was 7 characters long whereas CONTRACT has 8. I also thought of CONDUCT but that didn't fit the definition. Did the character count shrink too? After that I tried shrinking the word AGAINST and combining to some synonym of MAJOR to define passage. :~ In any event, I'm counting my effort today as a win. :-\

I was counting in base idiot. If you're not proficient in it, you'll never get the answer. Rejoice in your base 10 victory.
