Near Greenville, SC I could get that house for about $125K, but it would be 10-15 min. outside of any main center, and about 30 min. from downtown. I visited a buddy up on Long Island, NY. about 30 min. from Manhattan, and he rents a house thats about 1800-2000 ft2, and virtually no yard. It's in some disrepair, and goes for about $450-500K. Crazy! Anything he would actually consider buying would be upwards of $600k BW "In a world full of people, only some want to fly,Isn't that crazy?" - Seal

Now, I'm definately not native english, but I know that "prolly" is wrong ;P Whats wrong with "probably" ? Or is "prolly" some slang I haven't seen anywhere but here at CP ? Anyway, it looks kind of ugly. And your children will never learn to spell correctly when they're reading through dad's CP-posts. heh.. In defense of Nish: 'Prolly' - Literally wrong, but phonetically correct (in terms of English street slang). I have often when writing to close friends, use phonetic or SMS spelling instead of the 'correct' Queen's English. I know what i'm on about, they know what i'm on about, no harm done.

In the main city area for USD 109K you would prolly be able to buy about 1/5 acre of land (just the land, no house) Nish p.s. What's the sub unit for an acre? Here I have heard people use cents as in 1 acre = 100 cents. But it feels somehow incorrect

In London, one bedroom apartments often sell starting at $300,000 and up... And that isn't the nice bits of London X| The tigress is here :-D
Here you can buy or build a nice house on the riverfront for that much. How well do you tolerate heat?:-O

Welcome back to the sane world! In my area, my house is 2200 sq. ft. on about 1/3 acre of land (80x200 lot size) and I had the contractor build an oriental garden in the lot. My kitchen was custom designed to give me the most cooking space (I do alot of gourmet cooking) and our master bedroom was designed around our bedroom set (which is huge). The kitchen and master open out to a large wooden deck and paths leads back to a 12x30 pond and waterfall. It was built for us for $180,000. I suppose in LA they'd want a cool mil for this. :-) _____________________________________________ The world is a dangerous place.

Yea I know . I lived on the Left Coast for quite a while before moving to Texas in the late 60's. Not only is the difference obvious in housing but in nearly everything - from quality resturants to clothes to theatre tickets to autos to etc.... Guess now that one could point to the fact the CA is like the world would be if Dems ran everything and Texas if the Independants ran everything. I recently sold my 2300 sq ft home at the height of the housing boom in Dallas and moved to a much smaller ( 1302 sq ft ) home near White Rock lake. Paid more for the samll home than I could get for the larger home. Location Location Location... Richard PS: A friends family sold the home their father had bought right after WWII in Hawaii for 19000.00 for 1.3 million. Now thats the kinda real estate I want to get into. In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love; they had five hundred years of democracy and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. Orson Welles

Tax assessments don't seem to have anything to do with the market value. I'd consider you lucky, you don't have to may as much tax on it! :-D "When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute and it's longer than any hour. That's relativity." - Albert Einstein
Navin wrote: Tax assessments don't seem to have anything to do with the market value Here in Ontario, Canada, that is quite untrue. All municipal tax assessments are based upon fair market value. Every two years both my home and my cottage are assesed for fair market value and then used for determining my municipal tax levy on each property. You are correct for up until four or five years ago, when the municipal tax system was completely 're-invented'. Even though a lot of changes were phased in over several years, for some people the tax increases were phenomenal and this resulted in them having to dispose of property that they could no longer afford to hold, simply because the tax payments had increased dramatically.
