Can any Australian member of CP trace their family tree back to a criminal that came to Oz from England? I think that two of my ancestors were the black sheep in the family and were chased away to South Africa/Namibia. :)

Speaking of Australian origins, does anyone know of a good place to read about how Australia turned from basically a prison colony into a rather nice place to live with a decent government? Having heard nothing about it, I'm curious. John

I can't even remember where all the information's kept. I think it's at my aunt's place. We've traced our family tree back to King Edward IV, and before that it just follows the royal family. It seems that my ancestor at that point in time was an illegitimate son of King Edward, the result of an affair with a prostitute :wtf:

None of my ancestors were criminals (that were caught anyway), but I recently discovered an interesting overlooked fact - As Australia was a new colony and had extreme labour shortages, the powers that be decided to be extremely selective when choosing who would be transported. As a result, to get transported you had to be a skilled tradesman or specialist labourer. The vast majority of transportees had committed very minor offences, but were sent to Aus to alleviate the labour shortage rather than to rid England of undesirables. The murderers, rapists and scum (unless highly qualified) therefore were left to rot in Ol' Blighty. All the family tree stuff was being maintained by one of my aunts in Sydney I think, so I don't have it handy. But apparently my fathers side traces back to the Mayor of Boston (!), so I found that pretty neat.

He was a convict. That's all I know about him. My mothers side were free settlers as far as we could tell. A business man flew to Austrialia to visit some clients. At the airport, Customs asked him, among other questions: "Do you have a criminal record?". The business man responded with: "Do you still need one to get into Australia?". :laugh: I think this guy got searched thoroughly.... VictorV
