Hi all, I need your advice. I'm running a web server at home, but am going to move it to a hosting service. First because I've only 128kbit/s upstream, and secondly I'd like to have a decent domain name instead of this thoemmi.dyndns.org[^]. I've already subscribed at WebHost4Life[^] some days ago. However, I still don't know which domain name to choose. My first idea was to use my nickname (which is Thoemmi), but I think that it may be difficult to pronounce for non-German. My second thought was to just use my full name (i.e. www.ThomasFreudenberg.com), but my girl-friend would like to put some stuff on the server too, and we're not married ;) So I'm still looking for a nice name. What do you think of www.CodePotato.com, since I'm spending most of my spare-time programming? Or www.IpsoCodo.net? Or www.BlueCloud.com? However, I even don't know whether to use .com or .net. You see, I'm really confused. Any advice is welcome. :sigh: Regards Thomas

Had some strange reactions on my domain name (some good, some bad). Strangest thing was some Germans thinking it was a pron site :-O. So picking the right name is indeed important. ----------------------- New and improved: kwakkelflap.com My second CP article: MAP files[^] "Hey, Benny, can I pour you a beer?" "A little early, isn't it, Jim?" "For a beer?" "No, for stupid questions."

I just registered your favorite names, as well as common deviations. Just contact me if when you made your choice, and I can offer you a great deal! I'd go for "thoemmi"

        1. Make it a .com name 2. Try to make the name as short as possible. Joe Public generally think all names are .com or something local. Stuff like .net and .org confuse a lot of people. The longer a name is the more likely spelling mistakes will be. :-) Regardz Colin J Davies

so i've been working on getting a new domain name, turtleworks.com. check it out with whois, it's available. take a few weeks to make sure i can use Turtle Works as a business name. finish that and on friday last week go to register turtleworks.com. domain name not available! someone registered that very morning, isn't that amazing timing! it turned out alright i registered turtlehand.com which better indicates the intent anyway. Some time ago there were rumors that registrars check their query logs, and "reserve" them for domain trade.
