Mike Gaskey wrote: Christianity is not an ethenticity Many national communities define themselves through Christianity, so being christian is for some a distinction of ethnicity. Mike Gaskey wrote: Jews and Christians were not fighting, Europe was conducting progroms; Opposite examples can be found in History. They are of course much fewer but exist nonetheless. Mike Gaskey wrote: if I am not mistaken, is more on the order of indigenous people fighting versus invaders You're mistaken. Mike Gaskey wrote: Bullshit. Plain and simple, bullshit. Why not? After all, The US also committed a genocide exterminating the native population, enslaved millions of men, women and children for decades, and continue to segregate amongst the different components of its population. Is that much better?

I would like to think that facism couldn't get a foothold in a democratic society thats not being ravaged by poverty and running street battles between extremist poilitcal grounps, European or not. 'Healthy scepticism' is closer to the mark. The rise of the new right on the continent is a little worrying. The facists in britain have very little, highly localised support in sink council estates. They use the percieved unequal distribution of state benifits to make the white resisdents jealous of their pakistani and banglideshi neighbors. Make of that what you will.

I wasn't giving reasons for living there, just pointing out that if you consider the south or the southwest ignorant you're making a mistake - but the real reason for the reply is to shed additional light. To start, I'll assume you're not from the south, nor have you lived there. I relocated to Dallas Texas from Pittsburgh PA in '61. My father was transferred and the family relocated. I was 16 at the time and found it to be alien, I lived in what was then a rural community about 16 miles out of downtiwn Dallas. Across the street from our suburb was a cotton field. In the middle of the cotton field was a sharecroppers shack. I could see light between the boards of the shack and on cold winter nights I am certain those folks were cold. I was absolutely amazed when a Black stepped off of the curb so I, a 16 year old, could pass by unimpeded. I was also amazed when I went to the State Fair of Texas and saw 3 signs fo the restrooms: men, woman, and colored. The water fountains were labelled: white and colored, if my memory serves me right. There was also a billboard at the city line for Commerce Texas, if not Commerce it was another relatively small town well outside of Dallas, that said, "nigger don't let the sun set on your head". The last one that did, was hung. Needless to say that I saw tremendous change before I left Dallas for Indianapolis in '89. Dallas today has a black mayor, or did the last time I checked. Since my relocation to Dallas in '61, I have travelled (heavy business travel) and lived in other parts of the country: midwest, southwest, deep south, Denver, New England, New York. Lived in Mass. for better than 3 years, 77 - 81. Of all the different parts of the country, the southwest and deep south are by far the most desirable: Lower taxes; Friendlier people; Healthier economy (any connection to lower taxes?); Far better looking women. It is a pity that the vocal minority are cast as the majority when seen from the outside. The same happens for America with gung ho Texans and ingorant Southerners being represented as the majority of America. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Anna-Jayne Metcalfe wrote: "Cynicism has it's place in life - but it should be kept well away from your inner self." The problem is that so many move to Dallas and end up staying here. Of course we tend to segregate those in certain areas. I have lived in Texas since 1968 and am still considered somewhat outside the pale by many. I am the only non native Texan in our Home Owners Association ( about 150 members ) so my little part of Dallas is still "Old" Dallas. :) Richard "The man that hath not music in himself and is not moved with concord of sweet sounds is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils; Let no man trust him."
