Hey guys... I'm going to be in the US (colorado + california) for a week around christmas and in the true style of a geek am seeking an internet connection. ;) Would anyone have any tips that an Australian might find useful for setting up a dialup account that isn't going to cost me a bucket because i have to pay for 3 months or something stupid. Thanks! Tatham Oddie (VB.NET/C#/ASP.NET/VB6/ASP/JavaScript) tatham@e-oddie.com +61 414 275 989

Many libraries have public access. Also if you have T-Moble cell phone you can add wireless access[^]. With the T-Moble service, you can find hotspot access in public locations such as airports, American Airlines Admirals Clubs, Starbucks coffeehouses[^] and Borders Books & Music stores. I've got two suggestions... 1) Rent a lap top, and also in the true style of a geek mess around with the phone jack wherever you're staying... OR 2)Stay in an excellent hotel ;P But to tell you the truth, I wouldn't recommend going to Colorado at all. There's a terrible flu going around, got fatal in one or two cases. Have a good trip! Remeber that i did ask for "internet" not "aol-net". I am after a temporary solution just to dial in for the week - not a host of custom drivers and crappy software. I'm not sure if AOL Australia is incredibly different to AOL America or what - but I've been scared off for life. Custom virtual modem drivers? Custom dialers? Custom browsers? Custom email clients? How much more nonstandard can we get? Tatham Oddie (VB.NET/C#/ASP.NET/VB6/ASP/JavaScript) tatham@e-oddie.com +61 414 275 989

Thanks for the tips about Colorado Eyan - unfortunately it's too late to change anything now. Either way, no matter where you go or what you do life is full of dangers and surprises. Get over them, take precautions if necessary, and move on. Continuing in the true style of a geek, I already own a laptop as my primary machine. What I was interested in was information about any hosts that might be suitable, and have good deals that dont involve long term contracts. Anyway, thanks for your help! Net Zero was one of the items that come to mind however you may want to look at it first. You do have to download their software to connect. Not just set your machine up. How many different places are you going to be at. I do not know what percentage but a number of places do allow you to hook up into their connection for a fee. Does your provider have some agreement to allow connections here? My account does allow dial in across the US and some overseas. (at least did have not checked in sometime. :) "Don't be so anti-american, would you? KaЯl (to Paul Watson on Baseball Bats) 26 Nov '03 "

Thanks Michael, I don't mind downloading some custom software - just depends how invasive it is. Do you have any comments on this? Do you use it? I'm just against software as invasive as AOl - where it's virtually imposible to remove. As far as my current carrier, I use cable here so I dont even have a local dialup account to start with. Which part of Colorado are you going to be in? If the Denver area, give me a rough location and I can find you a hotel with access. Otherwise, I would suggest the AOL route also. I know it installs some wierd drivers, but they actually uninstall pretty easily, and you can just ignore the AOL interface and browse with your Browser of choice, or e-mail client of choice. Just remember to cancel when you finish, or they will bill you!!! Shawn

I need to check out where you live :) In Atlanta, you have to prove you live in the country to use the library's computers and at the airport you have to be a member of such clubs as the Delta Crown Room to get access to computers. I need to check out where you live :) In Atlanta, you have to prove you live in the country to use the library's computers and at the airport you have to be a member of such clubs as the Delta Crown Room to get access to computers. I personally have not used the library computers, but members of my family (mother, siblings and neices) have. I suspect that you do have to have a local identification of some kind. Most of the major airports I have been to this past year have access points in the terminals - but they do cost (usually $10 per day). The same company manages them, so you can go from Denver to Newark and still be able to use the access points. Many Marriots have DSL available in the rooms at $10 per day which also includes unlimited long distant calls (within the US). The access points at Starbucks is relatively new and there are a few cities (like NYC and San Francisco) that have access points at McDonalds (get a meal and a free hour of internet access). And if all else fails, cruise neighborhoods looking for an unsecured home access point. ;P Steve
