It's not about bandwidth; it's about money. :| For the cable modem providers around here they prefer you buy a corporate package nowadays to do that. I haven't seen any DSL providers with the same restrictions, although I haven't used many of them personally so who knows. Jeremy Falcon
None of our providers here offers hosting services, yet they get quite nasty about people operating servers on their systems. I can only assume that bandwidth is their concern, since they clearly have no interest in competing in the web server market. My own ISP has a disclaimer on the front page of their website : "Server activity will not be tolerated and will result in service disconnect." Twits. My server doesn't get many hits - there's no reason why it should. And I strongly doubt that any individual website will present a noticable load on the network. They aren't too keen on it here either, but plenty of people seem to get away with it :). Unfortunately Anna (like me) is apparently using NTL who seem to be the worst about it. Incredibly one of the things Brendan and I will take into consideration when moving next is who serves the area with broadband :rolleyes:.

The disk space allowance and bandwidth are too low for my site I'm afraid. Looking at the current stats I need to budget for 100MB disk space and 4GB/month bandwidth. They don't seem to have packages which are flexible enough for my needs. We live in a connected society and, as a result, we take for granted that certain things are necessary including high-capacity data connections. My parents would think that daft, but they have no real grasp of what change has come over the world because of the Internet. Even most of my peers would never think to ask about connectivity when making a location change, as they don't live in a truly technological world, but are mired in a mindset canalized 20 or 30 years ago. I'm not too familiar with how it all works, but I'm GUESSING some google searches with "Apache mod_gzip" will start pointing you in the right direction.
I, for one, do not think the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem may have been that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf.

I've been keeping an eye on the logs for my site, and over the last year the monthly bandwidth has been creaping up gradually, from 690MB/month last February to 1013MB/month by October. That's not come as a surprise, given the number of people I've met in the last couple of years and the gradually increasing content of the site. The site's hosted by Easily[^], whose rates are pretty reasonable...but I do have to pay for any bandwidth over the initial allocation of 5 GB/year. When I checked the logs in late December I noticed that the bandwidth useage has shot up to 3392MB/month - and the stats for January look like continuing that trend (and in fact, being even higher!) The increase is largely due to others reading my account of my recent trip to Thailand - in fact the index page for my recent surgery is responsible for the highest bandwidth consumption of all files on the site - including the (much larger) ResOrg downloads. This has got me thinking about HTML compression. Although I've experimented with HtmlCompress[^] in the past, I found it tended to mess up formatting so I ditched it fairly quickly. Html2Zip[^] does look promising though. It zips the HTML files uploaded to the server, so that when a page is requested, the zipped copy is downloaded and unzipped client side. A copy of the original unzipped page is also stored on the server in case the browser isn't compatible. It seems very promising (and pretty cheap at $28.95), but I do wonder about possible pitfalls - e.g. browser compatibility. Has anyone out there used it, and if so what are your experiences? Any suggested alternatives? -David St. HubbinsI've donw some digging and experimenting but so far all I get is an "Internal Server Error" message. :confused: Without knowing the specifics of their server configuration it's hard to know what I need to tweak...I've written back to them so all I can do is wait and see if they can give any meaningful answers.
