[edit]I give up. I have no idea what've happened. I suspect VS.NET had something to do with it, because IE stopped working after a programming session the other day. I've had this XP install for 2 years. I guess it's time to reinstall. Anyway, many thanks to you who gave me advice. Much appreciated![/edit] IE 6 has gone insane on me. It can't open anything! If I try to open a HTML page, local or remote - it doesn't matter, it gives me a dialog - do you wish to open or save this document? Of course, I can't access windows update because it only works with IE. :(( I don't want to reinstall everything this weekend. So, please, pretty please, with sugar ontop, help me if you can. :beg: ps. Everything related to IE in anyway is screwed up. VS.NET and MSDN help browser are affected. :(( ds. -- Seraphim Shock. Hmm...this is a wild shot, but maybe the extensions for HTML files got remapped to something that is no longer on your computer? Or wiped? [edit: as a test, try dragging and dropping an HTML file into your IE window...let us know what happens]

Yep, it sounds like the htm format is no longer associated with IE. You could reset IE settings, or dig in the registry :)

I'd look at the file type associations, like the others have said. Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types in Win2K. Locate htm, html and change OPEN to use iexplore.exe. If that fails, buy a book that comes with a free CD containing IE6 and reinstall from scratch. You can return it later.. "Another day done - All targets met; all systems fully operational; all customers satisfied; all staff keen and well motivated; all pigs fed and ready to fly" - Jennie A.

I did try the "Reset all IE defaults" button in the Internet Settings dialog, but without any luck. See my response to Jeremy above about the registry keys. What does your keys look like? -- Seraphim Shock. Gold for your ears.

You might try installing Mozilla and use that until you can get IE back up. Here is the ftp link. ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/.1/mozilla/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.6/

I've heard of this happening recently. Apparently if you run

                                        regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
                                        regsvr32 shdocvw.dll

it sorts itself out. Someone claimed it was related to the MDAC security patch that was released this week. [edit] Further information in KB article 281679 - You Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens After You Click a Link[^]. [/edit]
