hrm... probably can't help with the OpenWith stuff...devenv.exe, notepad.exe, winword.exe here... What is your ShellEx GUID? Also, do you get the exact same behavior if you try to open a .HTM and a .html file? (make 2 dummy ones and just doubleclick em)

[edit]I give up. I have no idea what've happened. I suspect VS.NET had something to do with it, because IE stopped working after a programming session the other day. I've had this XP install for 2 years. I guess it's time to reinstall. Anyway, many thanks to you who gave me advice. Much appreciated![/edit] IE 6 has gone insane on me. It can't open anything! If I try to open a HTML page, local or remote - it doesn't matter, it gives me a dialog - do you wish to open or save this document? Of course, I can't access windows update because it only works with IE. :(( I don't want to reinstall everything this weekend. So, please, pretty please, with sugar ontop, help me if you can. :beg: ps. Everything related to IE in anyway is screwed up. VS.NET and MSDN help browser are affected. :(( ds. -- Seraphim Shock. What does explorer say about file associations? (Tools/folder options/File types)

I'd look at the file type associations, like the others have said. Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types in Win2K. Locate htm,html and change OPEN to use iexplore.exe. If that fails, buy a book that comes with a free CD containing IE6 and reinstall from scratch. I've looked at the file assocs, found nothing wrong there. I've downloaded ie6setup.exe, but it didn't change anything. It downloaded some 100k and required me to reboot. X| -- Seraphim Shock. Gold for your ears.

So then what is the problem? You have Mozilla, forget about your troubled youth and enjoy early retirement in the pleasant company of Firebird. Oh wait... VS.NET... those sites that don't work on anything but IE... Outlook and all those other apps that host IE... hmm... bugger. Have you tried reinstalling just Internet Explorer (from your MSDN CD's)?
