I'm desperate, help! [edit]

I'd look at the file type associations, like the others have said. Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types in Win2K. Locate htm,html and change OPEN to use iexplore.exe. If that fails, buy a book that comes with a free CD containing IE6 and reinstall from scratch. You can return it later..:rolleyes: "Another day done - All targets met; all systems fully operational; all customers satisfied; all staff keen and well motivated; all pigs fed and ready to fly" - Jennie A.
I've looked at the file assocs, found nothing wrong there. I've downloaded ie6setup.exe, but it didn't change anything. It downloaded some 100k and required me to reboot. X| -- Seraphim Shock. Gold for your ears.

> probably can't help with the OpenWith stuff...devenv.exe, notepad.exe, winword.exe here... Same here. > What is your ShellEx GUID? Is ShellEx a progid? :~ > Also, do you get the exact same behavior if you try to open a .HTM and a .html file? (make 2 dummy ones and just doubleclick em) Yep. Even about:blank confuses it. (IE won't even start!) I think I'm screwed. :sigh: -- Seraphim Shock. Gold for your ears.
I've got one subkey under ShellEx Name: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1} Value:{EAB841A0-9550-11cf-8C16-00805F1408F3}

It says IE.. :sigh: -- Seraphim Shock. Gold for your ears.

How do you think I'm posting this? :-D -- Seraphim Shock. Gold for your ears.
So then what is the problem? You have Mozilla, forget about your troubled youth and enjoy early retirement in the pleasant company of Firebird. Oh wait... VS.NET... those sites that don't work on anything but IE... Outlook and all those other apps that host IE... hmm... bugger. Have a drink, it is friday, forget all your troubles and face them on Monday. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Christopher Duncan quoted: "All Corvettes are red. > Oh wait... VS.NET... those sites that don't work on anything but IE... Outlook and all those other apps that host IE... hmm... bugger. Exactly. :sigh: I thought I'd throw in some hours tomorrow. It seems I'll have my hands full reinstalling Windows XP. > Have a drink, it is friday, forget all your troubles and face them on Monday. I'm sipping some red wine. Very relaxing indeed. It's so relaxing, I had forgotten about IE, until your post/email showed up in my mailbox. :-D -- Seraphim Shock. Gold for your ears.

[edit]I give up. I have no idea what've happened. I suspect VS.NET had something to do with it, because IE stopped working after a programming session the other day. I've had this XP install for 2 years. I guess it's time to reinstall. Anyway, many thanks to you who gave me advice. Much appreciated![/edit] IE 6 has gone insane on me. It can't open anything! If I try to open a HTML page, local or remote - it doesn't matter, it gives me a dialog - do you wish to open or save this document? Of course, I can't access windows update because it only works with IE. :(( I don't want to reinstall everything this weekend. So, please, pretty please, with sugar ontop, help me if you can. :beg: ps. Everything related to IE in anyway is screwed up. VS.NET and MSDN help browser are affected. :(( ds. -- Seraphim Shock. I've heard of this happening recently. Apparently if you run
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dllit sorts itself out. Someone claimed it was related to the MDAC security patch that was released this week. [edit] Further information in KB article 281679 - You Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens After You Click a Link[^]. [/edit]

This happens after installing MDAC?!?!? Great. Viva Microsoft. I am thinking of setting up my own Department of Homeland Security and I will raise the level to Orange or Red whenever Microsoft releases an update. :suss:
Uhm.. raise the level to GLOBAL NUCLEAR WAR. I was jumping up and down chewing foam here for a while.. :mad: -- Seraphim Shock. Gold for your ears.

Now imagine how the guys at the European NASA feel when their Beagle thingy-vehicle disappeared. That's what happens when you load WinXP on a Mars vehicle :rolleyes:. And you whine about regsvr-ing two files and not being able to open HTML files. Jörgen, Jörgen ;)

Have you tried reinstalling just Internet Explorer (from your MSDN CD's)?
