LAN file sharing app
-
My friends and I get together almost every weekend for LAN parties. Each week we seem to get something everyone else wants: mods, patches, movie trailers, etc. It would be really cool if each of use could run a small server like app that indexes all of our files we want to share and also have a viewer to download/open the shared files. The whole browsing the network shares through explorer is a pain in the _ _ _. Anyone know of a program like this? Or is everyone going to suggest I make one;)

I don't know whether it's just the light but I swear the database server gives me dirty looks everytime I wander past. -Chris Maunder

I mean for LAN use only. Not for the internet. If that is what you meant, links? ;)

Steve Mayfield wrote: Peer-to-peer does not necessarily require the Internet Yes I completely understand that. That is exactly what I am looking for actually. I just cannot find anything freely available that is designed for LANs instead of the internet.

I'm sure there is a GPL one out there somewhere for Windows. Come to think of it, I think there is one written in C# here on CodeProject. Back in my Q3 days I ran an FTP server to share all that stuff plus a few other things. Of course, if you don't have geeks for friends you might wind up spending more time explaining FTP than setting up Windows shares ;P James "When you get frunk whats really fuinny is that you dont really realize you are cdtrunk till you are too drunk and by thewn you are too drunk to give a damn about being drubnk :-0" A drunk Nish over Sonork

That was another solution I was thinking of. Maybe make an app that shows all the FTP servers running on the network and the ability to connect/search them. James T. Johnson wrote: if you don't have geeks for friends you might wind up spending more time explaining Not a problem:cool:

There are no stupid questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.I would say Nullsoft's Waste is perfect for what your thinking but I'm not really sure where the legal stance of it is. Nullsoft posted it with source and then yanked it a day later and said people can't use it, but there are tons of sites that have it and Nullsoft doesn't seem to care to much. But it's basiclly a P2P client for a small group of people. Maybe there is something similiar that works just as well....

Yes, I remeber hearing about Waste a while ago. I'll check it out.

Well, I might recommend looking around for a copy of WASTE, since I think it's legal to use... Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Nullsoft posted it a while back, but AOL pulled it. It's a peer-to-peer for up to 50 people, secure, etc.
