WinXP Wierdness

Any body had any startup problems with winXP? Mine locks up alot just as its going to load the desktop. Nothing works except rebooting the machine. Then I've gotta go into safe mode and selectively eliminate the drivers and services that are loading, repeatedly rebooting the system, until it works. I jumped from win98 to xp hoping that the stability issues would disappear. It does run great when its running. I just cant get to boot reliably. At least with my linux system i'm usually one to blame if it crashes. With windows there's no one to blame but M$. Josh josh@that-guy.net

Did you do a fresh install or upgrade? If you're getting lockups it's most likely driver related.

It was an upgrade. I dont want to do a fresh install. I've done way too many fresh installs because of microsoft products. And its never a 'fresh' install with them. It just keeps stinkin' like the same old shite. AAARRRGGGHHH!!! Josh josh@that-guy.net

Golden rule of installing Microsoft OS's: Do a fresh install, never upgrade. Every upgrade I have ever attempted was a failure. I rarely have problems with fresh installs though. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge "In other words, the developer is dealing with an elephant, the accountant is dealing with a bunny rabbit." by Stan Shannon - 16/10/2001

On a related topic, I have a few questions about WinXP if anyone could answer them; 1) What information does the upgrade edition require for the activation stage? My old OS serial number? My address? My eye colour? My DNA code? 2) Does the upgrade edition of XP have any problems, like the upgrade edition of Win98 did? 3) Has anyone found out if it's possible to run 98/XP on the same system, using partitions or otherwise? Simon

- I believe you need to submit an electronic image of your blood makeup. You can get your local hospital or drug testing clinic to make one up for you. 2) NAFC. I never trust upgrades, as they leave too many bits from previous incarnations in all over the place. 3) Yes it is, I run Win2k Pro, Win2k Srv, Win 98 and Win XP RC2, all on the same machine.

- Wow, that's all the personal data MS want from their customers? I was expecting urine samples, life history, and a pound of flesh... 2) Hmm, i thought so. Still, it's half the price isn't it :) 3) Using which boot manager? Simon

- The life history is the optional part. 2) That's what MSDN's for. Buy the upgrade for your PDC, then install the full version from the MSDN disks using the upgrade's product key. 3) WinXP's

- How kind! 2) I'm not an MSDN subscriber. Perhaps there's a student licenced edition available. 3) Horrah! I bet the home edition doesn't have it though. Simon

At least with my linux system i'm usually one to blame if it crashes. With windows there's no one to blame but M$. If this were true then everyone would have the problem. The problem is one of your drivers, and it's the writer of the driver who is at fault. Actually with Linux, you don't know who to blame, or even where to start looking. With Windows, you know the evil bastards responsible reside in Redmond. "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

At least with my linux system i'm usually one to blame if it crashes. With windows there's no one to blame but M$. Actually, the blame almost certainly lies with driver writers. I've never had this problem when I tried various Linus installs, because they invariably have not supported my devices!! ----------------------------- "My name is Sven und I am from Sveden.
