WinXP Wierdness

Any body had any startup problems with winXP? Mine locks up alot just as its going to load the desktop. Nothing works except rebooting the machine. Then I've gotta go into safe mode and selectively eliminate the drivers and services that are loading, repeatedly rebooting the system, until it works. I jumped from win98 to xp hoping that the stability issues would disappear. It does run great when its running. I just cant get to boot reliably. At least with my linux system i'm usually one to blame if it crashes. With windows there's no one to blame but M$. Josh josh@that-guy.net
Did you do a fresh install or upgrade? If you're getting lockups it's most likely driver related.

It was an upgrade. I dont want to do a fresh install. I've done way too many fresh installs because of microsoft products. And its never a 'fresh' install with them. It just keeps stinkin' like the same old shite. AAARRRGGGHHH!!! Josh josh@that-guy.net

Golden rule of installing Microsoft OS's: Do a fresh install, never upgrade. Every upgrade I have ever attempted was a failure. On a related topic, I have a few questions about WinXP if anyone could answer them; 1) What information does the upgrade edition require for the activation stage? My old OS serial number? My address? My eye colour? My DNA code? 2) Does the upgrade edition of XP have any problems, like the upgrade edition of Win98 did? 3) Has anyone found out if it's possible to run 98/XP on the same system, using partitions or otherwise? Simon

The problem is one of your drivers, and it's the writer of the driver who is at fault.
