startI don't know if they were ported to Solaris, but on Linux, you have: Emacs (I hate it, but even some MS people love it). JED/JOE MC (Midinight Commander, comes with an integrated simple editor) TextPad Due to technical difficulties my previous signature, "I see dumb people" will be off until further notice. Too many people were thinking I was talking about them... :sigh:

Actually, I think you're mentioning rdesktop... Due to technical difficulties my previous signature, "I see dumb people" will be off until further notice. Too many people were thinking I was talking about them... :sigh:

And don't forget vim/gvim (hey - it's not "vi"! :)). I use it a lot for quick samples, tests, quick code hacks, and simple text editing (having "replaced" notepad with it).

startI have to i find vi quite good now I've figured out how it works. Not good for anything large scale, but still good especially when you want to work through a remote terminal. Joel Holdsworth Wanna give me a job over the summer? View my online CV and Job Application[^]

startVI isn't that bad, to enter the commands ESC-wq (write, quit) ESC-q! to exit without saving etc. NANO is easy to use in the command line, it shows everything. -Steven Hicks

emacs is a pain to install (as the default for various applications) and get used to. But you'll love it once you get used to it. "To his dog, every man is Napoleon"

startI agree with you totally. I like using Windows since I actually like to get some work done instead of spending all my time fiddling with my PC searching for drivers ;p But if you are stuck using Linux and need an editor I think there are few sophisticated alternatives to emacs "To his dog, every man is Napoleon"

Come on then! Whatcha gonna do? Bleed on me? ;P Seriously: On Unixish systems, nothing beats emacs. If you don't like it; fix it. It's extensible enough to host pretty much anything you need inside it. And then some more. Heck, if it was possible, some people would rather boot emacs than an OS. Those who argue that emacs sucks doesn't know and/or appreciate Lisp. It requires a month or so to become friend with emacs, but when you have, it'll be your best friend ever. After having been locked up in the Windows world for three years, I really do miss emacs. :sigh: -- Booohoo! -
