I spotted this in a SharpReader feed this morning: At the heart of Visual Studio 2005 Team System is a set of integrated software configuration management tools that we call Team Foundation (no codename). Team Foundation, which will ship as a server, server with standalone client, and as an integrated part of Visual Studio 2005, provides policy support, work item management, and enterprise-class source code control services. Hatteras is a spicy new SQL Server-based, fully transactional, client-server source control system that will blow your socks off. If you're lucky enough to be walking the great halls of TechEd this week in San Diego, don't miss the Visual Studio booth. If you want to talk about source control, I recommend you talk to Doug Neumann, Beny Rubenstein, or if you can squeeze your way through the crowd, Brian Harry. It's about time too - although we'll have to wait until Whidbey. C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot; C++ makes it harder, but when you do, it blows away your whole leg

Bug tracking and feature/project management are the two big ones. Ideally these all needs to be integrated together which is why this product looks promising. At the moment we use separate in-house feature and bug tracking solutions (neither of which are integrated together or with SourceSafe) and we suffer as a result. That looks pretty good, but we need something rather more powerful for our team. Until now SourceGear Vault has been closest to what we were looking for - a transactional system with equivalent features to VSS and the ability to import our existing databases. Team System is about far more than source code control however, and that plugs other gaps in our "armoury". I was thinking from the perpective of the IDE, with respect to large scale branching/management operations rather than day to day check-ins etc. and than the underlying Subversion engine. While I'm sure that Subversion itself would be fine, I doubt we'd find an IDE we could drop in place that would meet our needs without significant interruption to development. I also doubt we'd find a way to quickly (i.e. without writing code to do it) convert our existing SourceSafe databases. Vault was a possibility, but we may as well hang on in until Whidbey now. ;) Anna :rose: Homepage | Tears and Laughter "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch "Anna's just a sexy-looking lesbian tart" - A friend, trying to wind me up. Interesting. I was wondering what was to come of VSS.

Does that mean we have to live with VSS until Whidbey? :-/

It looks that way, unfortunately. :sigh: I think this is in the same bucket as the "managed C++ syntax" issue. In terms of IDE integration, there is a VStudio plugin called AnkhSvn[^] that supports the Subversion engine. .:. Keno .:.

I was actually thinking of a project orientated IDE equivalent to the VSS Explorer...IDE integration is OK for day to day stuff, but it's not idea for everything! So far, the other IDEs I've seen haven't been quite so easy to use or flexible as VSS, despite the other advantages they offer. There's the added consideration that we use the VSS COM interface as part of our automated build process too... Probably even after Whidbey. There are rumours that Hatters will be very expensive and only affordable for large development teams.
