Q about a Quote

"? 0 is in the geek world a value and has meaning and does not mean nothing, like in the real world (:-D)

You need 10 because there are two groups of people - Those who understand binary, and those who don't - if you don't understand binary then 10 is ten and the phrase does not make sense, but if you do understand binary then 10 is two and it makes perfect sense. ;) Steve

your question suggests you belong to "those who don't". I think you are mixed up about how a binary digit can have two values, 0 and 1, but in this joke 10 is not being used as a list of these two digits, it is the binary representation of the number 2.

So you've had it ingrained ever since your dad teased you! I just rediscovered this joke from a posting on the lounge recently and laughed out loud. Well, okay, still there is a disconnect here. You seem to be suggesting that 0 has a meaning for people who understand binary as opposed to people who don't. For computer geeks, zero is "off" and one is "on". Both are states of the same switch, so in a sense there are two "things" going on here. Right? But you still can't say "There is 1 type of person who understands binary..." because 1, even in binary, represents a numerical concept of 1 thing, it does not in any way represent the duality of a bit since it is only one of the two values that a bit can hold. Am I missing your point?

Ok this thread is just crazy. First you have the quote wrong. Go find it and read it carefully it's just fine the way it is. Second, please don't write requirements documents for any project i might work on.

It's a binary encoding that progresses by only changing one bit at a time, hence:
000 001 011 **010** 110 111 101 100 etcSo 010 in Gray code is equivalent to three, rather than two. See? :-D

It's a binary fraction. .1 = 1/2 .11 = 3/4 .01 = 1/4 etc. Almost all US construction workers use binary without even realizing it. That's why it's better then the metric system. ;P
