In a couple of months I'm going to be looking for a 3-6 month contract in Brisbane, Australia. I've been working in a small business for the past two years and in a different state before that. I'm trying to work out what sort of contract rates are standard in the current environment. I have a lot of very strong skills and know that I can command a decent rate, but I don't want to price myself out of the market, nor do I want to undercharge. Any ideas? Or suggestions where I should look? Quick summary of my skills: Very strong C#, .Net, ASP, VBScript, ASP.Net, HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, OO, Flash, Highly Developed Graphic Design skills, SQL Server Moderate C++, C, Visual Basic, MSAccess I also have very good people skills, great written skills, grammar, spelling, etc, and am good at both training and leading others when required. Heh, that sounds like a resume, but the point of course is to give you an idea of what I have to present to a potential employer, in case you are familiar with the Brisbane market. G'day Nathan, I'm in sunny Brisvegas and work with C++ in the engineering and foodservice industries. We run our own small software company here, so I mostly work for myself, but on the the rare occasions that I take on contract work, I normally charge $150-%200/hour for short term work (say a month) and drop that down to 'mates rates' of around $75-$100/hour for longer jobs. Feel free to give me a call (07 3300 0059) if I can be of any help. Regards, Steve

Thanks for the info. I should add that I've got about 5-6 years of commercial experience, and I'm guessing you probably have a significant amount more, which may make a difference in the rates charged. I might give you a call a little later actually, thanks for the offer! It'll be of help when I go into a recruitment agency if I have a good idea of exactly what rate I'm looking for, and make it easier for me to sell myself. Perhaps you can recommend a good recruitment agent or two. NATHAN RIDLEY Web Application Developer email: nathan @ netlab.com.au [remove the spaces before and after the @ symbol]

Recruitment agents are evil - avoid them if you can. The one job I nearly got through one, they hired someone else. Why ? To avoid paying a recruitment agency. Christian I have drunk the cool-aid and found it wan and bitter. - Chris Maunder

Egads! I just realized that I've been churning out code for a living for nearly 25 years now! The engineering field that I work in (railway electrification design) is fairly specialized, hence the generous rates. Sorry, I'm not familiar with any local recruitment agencies, so I can't help you there. Regards, Steve

Sorry. I just take on the odd bit of contract/consulting work when I have a bit of spare time from my normal day job. Regards, Steve

Whereabouts are you in Australia, Christian? Do you work contract or full time, and what kind of rates have you been seeing lately? NATHAN RIDLEY Web Application Developer email: nathan @ netlab.com.au [remove the spaces before and after the @ symbol]

I live in Sydney and for contract programming I would be looking for $45+ per hour. Brisbane will pay less as the cost of living is alot less. I turned down a contract c++ role in Sydney with UniSys that was $35 an hour and picked up a full time job with sick pay, holidays etc that pays about 45 an hour. I have about 5 yr experiance not only in programming but in this specific field so that helps alot. Its much easier to find work in Sydney and Melbourne

I'm in Hobart and I work full time, and do some contract work on the side. I tend to quote on a job by job basis, rather than an hourly rate. The more a job interests me, the less I charge :-) Christian I have drunk the cool-aid and found it wan and bitter. - Chris Maunder
