Hi all, I know there is a hosting question about once a fortnight, so I think its about time I asked one. After finding out that my brother is being ripped off by one of his good friends, I've decided to basically whip up the same site that he has at the moment, but using ASP.NET and find a good hosting server. Now if anything I ask sounds a little stupid, it's probably because my experience with ASP.NET is very limited. (this is a good learning experience). I'm after a hosting server that allows me to use ASP.NET, provides access to SQL Server(or any db access), and the code-behind ability. The site I'm creating will most likely be quite simple to start with, and will not necessarily get much more complicated, so I'm looking for something quite cheap. What are peoples experiences? Any good hosting servers out there? [EDIT] One more question. If this guy registered the web address, and I create a new site and put it somewhere else, how do I go about making that address point to a different server? [/EDIT] Thanx :) If there's one thing I've learned, it's that life is one crushing defeat after another until you just wish Flanders was dead. - Homer Simpson

Almost all hosts that are MS based offer these features. Back to basically asking for a good host like the other questions :) Before I got my dedicated server, I use to use Fripple.com[^] Had them for a few years. There small package has many Dundas accessories and start at $6.99 per month. Rocky <>< www.HintsAndTips.com www.MyQuickPoll.com www.GotTheAnswerToSpam.com

Thanx rocky I'll have to have a look at Fripple. From the searches that I've done, I've found many places that host only ASP pages, and don't even give you access to any database. I'll check out Fripple, and hopefully many more before I pick something thats right for me :) If there's one thing I've learned, it's that life is one crushing defeat after another until you just wish Flanders was dead. - Homer Simpson

All you need to do is make a request for transfer of domain from the old hosting site(the one that "this guy" is using) to your hosting site. After the transfer is complete, you update the DNS entries for the old site to point to the new servers and voila you should be set! NOTE: Please bear in mind, this transfer would need the "blessings" ( read approval) of the guy and/or any entity who owns the domain currently! I've had good luck with WebHost4Life.com[^]. (If you use them, I'd appreciate a referral: http://www.WebHost4Life.com/default.asp?refid=jsagara[^]). Regarding the domain name, try to make nice with the guy who owns it and see if he'll transfer it to you. Failing that, see if he'll point the DNS entry at your new servers. If not, consult a lawyer.

Thanx Jon, I'm hoping as he's a guy that is supposedly a friend of my brother, and also someone I used to play basketball with, that he'll turn out to be a nice guy. I would really hate it if it came down to using a lawyer. You would think if he was hired for a task, and he registered that name, he registered it on behalf of my brother/his business. So the ownership would be my brothers, and not the web developers. Correct? Thanx :) If there's one thing I've learned, it's that life is one crushing defeat after another until you just wish Flanders was dead. - Homer Simpson

Usually you do work on behalf of an employer, and the employer owns the work once it's finished, but I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know the definitive answer. Good luck - hope everything works out okay for you. :)

SetupSite! WOAH! Worst webhost I ever used! Maybe they improved, but my site was down for hours everyday because of problems I had never seen. For example, the server would cache my .ASP pages (even though I had no cache system implemented). So my clients ended up seeing 2 days old pages, even after I updated the ASP/HTML code! I also remember they had severe server issues very often. For me, never again!

Caching can be done either server or client side. They didn't want to do that... their server just did that all the time for no reason! It could be ok for a few days they it happened again. Very annoying!

I personally use www.webhost4life.com for my Glacial Components site and I'm pretty happy with them. Their 24/7 tech support thing is a lie, but other than that the servers are decent, the bandwidth is decent and the uptime has been great.

Hi Allen, thanx for the info. I had a look at your site and it looks very professional. Nice work. I've had a few people now tell me about webhost4life. It seems like it has all the stuff I need and at a very respectable price.
