I agree with you in ways, but I've worked for two companies where I could (and did) make a very big impact, but I was always fearful for the stability of the company. Proplanner (my current employer...until tomorrow) is starting to stablize after 2+ years, but it's just not a good working condition wondering if you (or anyone) will have a job tomorrow (because the company might fold). It's caused a lot of stress. That, and Iowa is incredibly boring.

Heath, At least you were in Ames where there was more going on than in the small towns in Iowa. Congrats from a current ISU student. :)

Today is my last day in my current job. I'm leaving the corporate development world to go back to the small software company world. I start my new job Monday, which is also my birthday. So that's my birthday present this year.

Funny, I'm leaving my job this Friday (a day before my birthday) in a small software company (I've worked for two startups in the last 4 or 5 years) and moving to a big company (Microsoft). Congrats on your move and an early happy birthday!

Probably not as many, but I'm hoping that CodeProject can serve as my "community service", which every engineer there is required to do (just usually in the newsgroups). I also plan on doing a lot of backpacking. :)

If you like to waste your money at bars all night. X| Thanks, and good luck with ISU! Just remember they won't teach you nearly enough (and the only thing current is Java), so spend a lot of time outside learning on your own. Believe me, it's fun to teach the profs as several of us did (just don't go too far and schmooze as much as possible, but don't get a brown nose if you know what I mean). I got to know a lot of the professors and it worked out well (the one professor that would never allow late homework did for me once and even let me finish the final after my alarm went off late - my fault - that day).

When I ended up in the emergency room with heart-attack-like symptoms (my family has a bad history with them), I knew it was time to start looking. 70-80 hour weeks EVERY week and trying to balance a family (currently a wife; fortunately no kids) just wasn't working anymore after 2 years with hardly any vacation.

It's a little place known as Iowa. We just got a brand-spanking new mall with a Pottery Barn and everything! Yeeha! Seriously, if I hear about that stupid mall that makes us look like bigger hicks than we already do again (it's on every friggin' radio station and people are flocking to it like Catholics to the Pope), I'm going to go insane! I used to do a lot of backpacking with the Boy Scouts (I'm an Eagle Scout) and Explorers (like the Boy Scouts but older and with chicks...er, young women), but it's been many years since I had that chance. I'm definitly looking forward to it. When I was interviewing at Microsoft, I took my wife to Mt. Rainier (only an hour away...except we got stuck in rush hour traffic - but it was "good" to experience) and that was her first time in the mountains. She loved it (good thing). I also want to eventually pick up some rappeling gear and pick that back up.

Snow? You guys call 2" of snow a year snow? :) 2" is a dusting here in Iowa. It takes (literally) aobut 2' before they even think about postponing anything. The scrapers don't even come out until there's about 3 or 4" of snow. I worry more about tornados since they're 100% unpredictable in nature. I actually did quite a bit of research into natural disasters (well beyond the "science project") when I was younger so I have a good idea what to expect. The only that does worry me a little is that Mt. Rainier seems to be exhibiting the same symptoms that caused Mt. St. Helens to blow her top. If Rainier does go, we're going to get very "dirty" in the greater Seattle area! :~ But, I'll take the bad with the good. Washington is very beautiful and I know we'll love it. We'll be leaving some great friends behind (like Nick Parker here on CP) but we'll stay in touch. for Xbox Live! :)

No, ISU doesn't teach enough. I've learned way more at my job than I have at school. But I guess that's how it goes. I wish I had gotten more out of 309 now though, I'm basically in charge of all my projects and I don't know a good way to take them from start to finish. I'm reading some articles here on CP that will hopefully help me out. I've used some of your articles too. Thanks for those. :)

I'll keep that in mind, thanks! :) We actually kind of like Issaquah, though we haven't had a good change to look around. It's not too far from Redmond and Bellevue (where my wife would most likely work for the time being) and I won't have long commutes on the interstate (just a little on 90 then take 148th St. north a few miles). We're still a ways off on buying a house or townhome, though.

Yeah, I hear Issaquah is nice. My friend Zach, moved from there, he says it's pretty rich. My advice to you - being that I lived in Washington - is live as close to or in the city as possible. Unless you like the feeling of isolation. You don't want to get caught up in a little logging community stuck in the 80's do you? /\ |_ E X E GG

Today is my last day in my current job. I'm leaving the corporate development world to go back to the small software company world. I start my new job Monday, which is also my birthday. So that's my birthday present this year.

Good luck Jeff. By coincidence, I'm doing pretty much the same thing in a week's time... Anna :rose: Homepage | Tears and Laughter "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch "Anna's just a sexy-looking lesbian tart" - A friend, trying to wind me up.
