There is only one proper way to install a service pack 1) backup all data 2) slipstream the service pack into a bootable disc 3) blow away current os and do a full re-install 4) look on in wonder as the os works :) I have great misgivings about installing service packs (that replace 90% of the os system files) on a system that has who knows what software installed on - it's just not worth the risk
100% agreed. I'm gonna slipstream SP2 onto an XP CD tonight methinks :-). -- Andrew.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh :mad: :mad: Installed SP2 on my work machine yesterday. Perfect. No issues. Very impressed. Installed SP2 on an older machine at home last night. Perfect. No issues. Very Impressed. I though I'd just take the dive and install it on my laptop (where I do most of my non-work work.. if you know what I mean).... :eek: The damned laptop won't load windows now. :mad: START: Starts, after the BIOS post etc, I see the lovely loading Windows XP screen with the shiny blue progress bar bouncing from side to side to show me that something is actually happening... then the screen goes black, just like it would before the lovely blue logon screen is displayed... and nothing.. machine reboots... now... GOTO START; (i.e. it loops continuously doing the above) Ah... I'm moving to linux, or a mac.. or something that doesn't screw up when you install an update. BTW. Windows doesn't seem to cope properly with that. I fixed it by reenabling ACPI. You may be able to fix it by booting from the CD and selecting Repair. Stability. I know the feeling about time taken - I've just spent 2 days making a bootable XP sP2 dvd with all the drivers, utilities and apps used on my network - only just have it working now. Most of the time taken though was waiting for the dvd to burn at 2x :(

The first time it happened the instant I put a CD in the drive, the second time when it was just about done reading files off of it. I'm not sure if XP2 is to blame, but it's hard to rule out since I haven't had a single blue screen on this machine so far--but OTOH I've only had the machine itself for less than a month. The timing is still suspicious though.

It always takes me about 2 days to get Linux installed on a system. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.
What the hell do you do?? A full install of SuSE 9.1 took around 6 hours for me.. but I would never use half of the installed stuff. Not long after I installed it I reclaimed th partitions for Windows though. Regards, Brian Dela :-) http://www.briandela.com IE 6 required.

the best one i've found is at www.bink.nu/bootcd[^] you have to do a little bit of translating from older versions of nero to what's current, but nothing major (screenshots are a little different is all) The one thing I found was that as soon as I push the dvd over 4 gig it stopped working as a bootable xp disc - working this out is what took 2 days :( THIS[^] is the most important pic as you have to make sure you use no emulation and change the sector load count to 4, but other than that you can add anything you want up to 4 gig in size You also need to download the xp bootsector for the cd here [^]
