BW wrote: "At least 4 weeks!! That's insane! Do you have a state ID card you can get in the mean time? Can you just go and retake your driver's test? They print up new cards in mintues." Tell me about it! That's the problem, I had both my driver license and state ID card in my wallet. I already called them up and was told 4 weeks is the soonest, no ifs ands, or buts about it. Pretty crazy, huh, especially for us, given we're in the technology business and we know how easy it is to do something like printing up a card. Something else must definitely be going on. My main worry now is that at this point I can't get my money back for the event, although for everything else (hotel, air fair) I can. regards

If your DL is somewhat recent (a couple years), I imagine they have a digital copy of your photo on record. They could easily see you are who you claim, and print it out. That's frustrating. Hope it works out for you. BW

So somehow over the weekend I lost my wallet, which contained my driver license as well as my ID card. Now here I am Monday morning with absolutely no way to prove my identity and VS Live is only two weeks away, an event for which my boss has setup everything for me to attend, air fare, hotel, event registration, etc... I called up the DMV and asked how long it would take to obtain replacements for my lost documents. Then I started crying when the person on the other side of the phone told me it would take at least 4 weeks. So far I'm screwed. Then I go and research how long it would take to get my passport. At first I thought I was saved, since for an extra fee a one day replacement is available. So I call, but sure enough in order to obtain my passport I need to show my birth certificate as well as my ID, which I don't have! Furthermore, the expedite service requires proof of international travel, yet I live in LA CA and VS Live is in SF CA. Finally, to top things off, I just thought, well I'm just going to have to cancel everything, but after Jan 5 VS Live registration is non refundable, or at least that's what my confirmation email states. So what the hell am I going to tell my boss now? Totally screwed

I say get a credit card and take a taxi instead of renting a car. The hotel should not bother you too much if they see your credit card.

In any case, California DMV will issue you an interim license valid for 60 days and/or a receipt for your ID card until you receive your new photo license and/or photo ID card in the mail (which is probably the 4-week thing you were initially told).

Firstly, condolences. I have had all my identity stolen and it is a right royal pain. Secondly, pardon my stupidity but why do you need a passport to get from LA CA (Los Angeles, California?) to SF CA (San Francisco, California?) How risky is it to drive without a license there? Here you can go for months without being checked. regards, Paul Watson South Africa The Code Project Pope Pius II said "The only prescription is more cowbell. "

Yikes! That's a 9 hour drive up the Pacific Coast Highway, very scenic BTW, or about 7 hours up Interstate 5 in the middle of the desert and stinkin' nowhere. RageInTheMachine9532 "...a pungent, ghastly, stinky piece of cheese!" -- The Roaming Gnome

Can you not get a passport in 2 weeks??? :OMG: and :WTF: if you can't. The standard is 10 days for a passport over here and you can actually get one in 3 hours (+ the time it takes to get to one of the 3 passport offices in the country). Over here you need some proof of your name (e.g. bank records will do), signature and proof of id from the GardaĆ (police), and a copy of your birthcert. All of these could be obtained in a day and then 10 days max (including weekends) to get your Passport delivered. Oh, and sorry to hear it. I hope you manage to get something sorted out. Maybe you should move to Missouri. They print them while you wait. All digital and pretty looking. I've lost mine twice....once while floating down a river, and was able to have one made the same day within an hour. Good luck. Tom Wright tawright915@yahoo.com

Take a bus to the conference. This will only work if you have a LOT of free time, though. :) An expert is somebody who learns more and more about less and less, until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.

Ah, right. This is why I am in favour of bar-code tattoos on all humans. Harder to loose. ;) Hope you figure something out in time for the event. Maybe give the event managers a call and ask if some alternate identification can be used (married? got bank statements? social security?) or pre-arrange that you won't have ID. regards, Paul Watson South Africa The Code Project Pope Pius II said "The only prescription is more cowbell. The bar-code tattoo is a bit more fashionable (remember that whole bar-code/vampire-glyph back-of-neck tattoo craze?) but indeed a chip is more practical. If you don't get pulled over, you're fine. If you do, you're fined. If you were careful (no speeding, etc.), you could probably get by quite a while without getting stopped. Of course, if someone else screwed up and caused a wreck, you'd be in a bad way. Also i seem to remember a fair number of checkpoints on the roads down towards Mexico... Regardless, you really need a license - it's your ID for banks, merchants, etc. above and beyond being proof of permission to drive.

He said he lives in LA (Los Angeles) and the conference is in SF (San Francisco). That means a drive north and the last time I was in that area, which was last year, there were no checkpoints. Actually, it's not too bad a bad drive - just a few hours, depending on your speed.

Stop by the LA County Hall of Records and pick up a certified copy of your birth certificate. Drive to Arizona and rent an apartment. Stop by the Motor Vehicle Division of the Arizona Department of Transportation (MVD - our version of the DMV in the PRC) and request a drivers license. We don't have lines or any need for reservations like the CA DMV has. There is no test involved as long as the computer says your CA license is valid. Walk out in ten minutes with a new license. Return to the apartment and cancel the rental. Return in 25 years to renew your license. "If it's Snowbird season, why can't we shoot them?" - Overheard in a bar in Bullhead City

Losing your license is one thing, as long as you don't lose your wallet and still have some moolah left for the poor impoverished cop. His hands felt the grasp of strong white hairs, and he knew he would not survive this fungus.

If the suggestion hasn't already been made! did you try to get a CA ID Card whilst your driver license is being printed? will this suffice for the conference. Tony

Actually the law does require you to carry your license with you at all times while driving. I guess they could look you up on the database but without your license how will they know they you are who you say you are. I doubt they will be bothered to go the extra mile and verify that the car is ours for our convenience using other forms of ID. Atleast they don't do it over here. There is no fine btw. Fix-it tickets, you can get whatever they want fix, fixed and they will waive the fine.

With some AAA memberships I believe you could drive down the road 5 mins, mysteriously run out of gas, and they'd have to tow you to your destination....
