Don Box @ MSFT

He *was* wearing shorts, right? :omg: ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "My grandfather once told me that there are two kinds of people: those who work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group, there was less competition there" - Gandhi
Actually he was wearing (Don) Boxers

Well, how much C++ stuff have you heard from lipman since he was sucked into the MS void? Not a freakin word. The only publicly acknowledged thing he's said was something about how .NET was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Box is gonna be coerced and brainwashed the same way. LOL The same amount of stuff I heard from him before he went to MS. NONE! To be perfectly honest, Don Box hasn't exactly been floating my boat for the last few years anyway. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

Don is a very clever bloke and Microsoft like to hire the best. Not sure he'd fit in at MS as he likes to do things his own way. (Hence his trouserless lecture at Tech Ed 2000 in Amsterdam) Michael :-)

Nobody knew. He stood behind a podium for the entire session and then came out from behind it at the end. His COM dance in one of his previous sessions was the coolest thing at the conference. Michael :-)

The current thread on the DOTNET list is talking about Don Box joining MS. Given that the guy is a living legend of COM what do you guys think about this? I took "Essential COM" from Don's Company, Developmentor, in 1996. He taught the course. He said a couple of times that he really wished he could work at Microsoft, but that he couldn't afford the pay cut. I suspect they resolved that problem for him. Jim

I said right away that they don't need him to do that, they only need him to create the illusion of finally wanting to do it. here's the skinny. Here's a snip from Don's site: Fact: I am now an Architect at Microsoft Corporation. Fact: My first day of employment was January 7, 2002. Fact: I am part of the .NET Developer Platform team and am working on web service infrastructure. Fact: My family and I will be living in Washington state as of March 2002. Until then, I am shuttling back and forth, spending weekends in LA and 4-5 days a week in WA. Fact: I am keeping my column at MSDN magazine. Fact: I am still a series editor at Addison Wesley. Fact: I am still going to write Volume 2 of Essential .NET, but not in 2002. Fact: I will continue to hang out on the DOTNET list. Fact: I will still be on the conference circuit, but nowhere near as much as before, especially in 2002. David http://www.dundas.com

Too bad . . . he was an impressive independent speaker and author. This is a great loss to the developer community at large since he always spoke (and wrote) very freely and candidly. Now he will become aware of the 'truth' - the real inside story since he now participates in it; as a result, I expect him to be a lot less candid and outspoken. A lot of what COM came to be and evolved into is a result of Don's indirect input as a Microsoft outsider. Don's strength in the industry came from the fact that (besides being smart) that he could objectively influence a large number of developers to follow his lead. People (like myself) listen to him because what he says is technically sound and, more importantly, technically unbiased. I personally will be less inclined to follow Don's writings and speeches since they will now *have* to be biased towards Microsoft-centric values and solutions. If Don was biased towards Microsoft values and solutions before he joined Microsoft, it was (I suspect) a result of conscious choice, not by affiliation. I also believe this presents a great opportunity since Don's role is now vacant. To underscore that importance, the Visual C++ team at Microsoft is
working hard on an interim release to deliver these features as soon as
possible. In terms of ISO Standard C++, the team has made exceptional
strides in compliance work. For the power programmer, this means templates,
templates, templates. Third-party libraries that heavily utilize templates,
such as Loki and Boost, now compile internally without workarounds.-- Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?

 Is it really true that the ".Net" term is attributed to him? [Requesting a serious answer, but reasonably expecting one! ] Alice thought that running very fast for a long time would get you to somewhere else. " A very slow kind of country!" said the queen. "Now, here , you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place".
I don't know about .NET itself, but the term "boxing" has been said to be named after him. James Sonork ID: 100.11138 - Hasaki "Not be to confused with 'The VD Project'. Which would be a very bad pr0n flick. :-D" - Michael P Butler Jan. 18, 2002

Hello! Here is also video (WMF format, about 5MB) with 'key parts' of his (Don's) bathtube presentation. ( http://www.dnjonline.com/TechEd2001/DonBoxBath.wmv) On his website Don promises even more spectacular show this year. He say: "I continue to speak on .NET and XML at internal and public conferences and events. In particular, I plan to top my bathtub talk at TechEd Barcelona in the summer of 2002."
