I've got the feeling there are many aviation fanatics there. So let's talk about planes, and especially what is your favorite one? I porpose two categories, propeller and jet. Honor to whom honor is due, I begin ;P Propeller plane: Tempest Mk V[^] Jet plane: I'm hesitating between the Rafale[^] and the incredible Blackbird[^] So, what are your choices? (pictures welcome!)

I have always like the lines of the Spitfire probably due to growing up in Chicago and having it hang right in the entrance to the Museum of Science and Industry[^] For earlier props I will vote for the Fokker DIIV Fokker D IIV[^] Early Jets goes to the F-86[^] For newer jets the F-16[^] wins I do not mind getting old. It beats all the other options that can think of.

I really favour propellor planes over jet planes, especially WWI and WWII fighter planes. Shame that Anthony Fokker died at the age of 49 in 1939, he made some impressive planes. Prop: Fokker G1[^] Prop: Vought F4U Corsair[^] Jet: A10 Thunderbold (warthog)[^] Arjan

In no particular order: Prop - Spitfire, FW 190, Vought Corsair, P38 Lightning, Mosquito Prop - B17G Flying Fortress, Lancaster Jet - Blackbird, A10 Warthog, Buccaneer, Harrier Jump Jet, Mig25 Foxbat Best experience with Jets - The one and only Red Arrows Display Team. I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

I'm not saying this is my philosophy: In WW2, the rationale behind dropping the bomb(s) was it would end the war faster, and save more lives (than conventional war). Many died, but not on the USA side, and it worked. My philosophy: If YOU were going up in a plane, which would you prefer: one the enemy can't see, or the 25 year old one? THAT is what I meant by saving lives. You couldn't pay me to go up in a Sea King. Give me a Cormorant or something else younger than me and ok. As a leader, it's preferable to send soldiers out in vehicles which give higher rate of survivability, balanced with available cash. Yes, it's more expensive for that new plane or tank. But it's even more expensive to TRAIN those soldiers in it. Not to mention the PR flak back home whenever someone dies. "Why weren't they properly equipped?", etc. NASA had explicit instructions in the race for the Moon. Send men to the Moon AND bring them back. Lots of spin-offs in tech came from that project, just like spin-offs happened from the Cold War arms race into civilian sectors. So the money isn't a total loss. Top 10 Geek Resulutions: 5. Bombers, as any weapon, are design to kill, and if possible efficiently. If a vehicle is made to protect its crew, it is to enable the crew to kill more. I don't raise any morale issue on that, I'm just stating a fact. Richard Jones wrote: the money isn't a total loss. I didn't say that. I think that we have to prepare war to enjoy peace. Nonetheless, I also think that "Every gun that's made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed". But it's another debate :)
