OK, first off, *I* would have never thought a bird would just blindly fly into a spinning death trap like this ... obviously I know nothing about a birds ability to reason while inflight. However ... the people that operate said "Wind power station" know this is happening, and has been happening for some time now. I would have thought they would have installed some kind of bird deterrent, if for no other reason than to keep the windmills from being potentially damaged ... they aren't cheap. They also *had* to know that some animal rights group would eventually sue and/or raise cain about the situation, costing them millions in marketing and lawyer fees; or maybe I know nothing about this either ... In anycase, I'd like to say that I've purchased several small ultrasound devices for my home that seem to keep pests, including birds, away from my attic. They don't bother me, the kids or the dog ... I'm certain that there's an equal possible solution, just on a much larger scale, to this problem that won't cost the state millions; unlike the court costs and whatnot they're going to spend now ... But what do I know ...

I have to disagree. In Ireland we don't have any Nuclear Power plants and I doubt we ever will due to the ongoing fiasco with Sellafield Nuclear plant in the UK and also due to the fact that the Irish Sea is also the most radioactive sea in the world after lots of radioactive waste was dumped in it by those running the UK nuclear power plants. Anyway, almost all of our power comes from fossil fuel based power stations with a few hydro electric dams dotted here and there. The thing that pisses me off is that in Ireland there is almost always wind! Always... we have a few wind farms in Ireland (one out in the irish sea and a few on the west coast facing the Atlantic) and this is simply not enough. I personally think they look very nice and it is complete bullcrap that they make lots of noise. I was standing at the base of one one day when I was on a bike trip in Germany and there is barely any noise. Their footprint is an awful lot smaller then a CO2-producing, fossil-powered station and with the wind we get here it has been said in reports that we would have enough excess electricity to power a good portion of Wales. Sure, some birds will fly into them, some people won't like the look of them but to me pollution free power is a lot more important then somebody's perception of what looks nice and what doesn't. I'm sure pumping millions of tonnes of polution into the atmosphere is <sarcasm>ever so slightly</sarcasm> worse then polution free power generation. We tried those kind of devices years ago in our barns to keep the starlings out. Just gave the birds another ledge to build their nests on. I am curious because pest control is still a problem and the pests (mice especially) seem to avoid the traps for the most part and I really dislike poisons (to many possible unintended victims).

Actually I have to disagree. I think the windmills look beautiful and alien and when the sun is going down they really add to the view. As well as providing renewable energy.

I don't get why they don't cover the blades with a simple screen. Sure, it would cost more, but compared to the cost of the equipment, it shouldn't be much more, right? That way, the birds would just bounce off the thing if they collide. John
