Canadians awarded gold medals

Well, it looks like the IOC awarded the Canadian pairs skaters the gold medal. I guess the Russians got to keep theirs as well. Good for both of them...this was a messy situation. This got me thinking...how many gold medals are produced for the Olympics? I assume there is a fixed number of them, for situations when people tie for the gold. Yeah, but the French judge got canned. I'll bet John is gonna go off on this one, not that I blame him. The entire Salt Lake City thing has been bad karma from the time they bribed the commitie to select'em. This whole thing is like a replay of the Election 2000 - "recount! recount!" What a load of crap. If this is true, than even the little bit of respect I *did* have for the Olympics just evaporated. The entire concept has gotten entirely out of control. Did the Canadians deserve the Gold? Well, of course, they did. But handing out two gold medals makes the entire contest a waste of time on the part of everyone involved, including the spectators. There is no such thing as two contestants both being number one. Hell, why don't they just hand a gold medal to everyone who participated. It just shows what a bunch of political louts the IOC is comprised of. If the judges were wrong, then they were wrong, and the IOC should have had the balls to tell the Russians to give the damned medal back. "Thank you, thank you very much" Elvis.
They could only take the gold medals back if it was the winners' fault. Don't forget that the French judge was just 1 of 9. They removed her vote, and remaining votes split: 4 against 4. This is why both pairs were awarded golden medals. If you watched soccer, you must know that a lots of games raise complaints about judges (including corruption and conspiray theory). Even when FIFA (or UEFA in Europe) admit the judge's fault, they simply disqualify the judge, it is very very rare that the game is replayed. Figure skating is much more vulnerable to judges' opinion. If the Federation start taking back medals, it will be better to declare figure skating not a sport competition - just an art. The resolution of the timer is only hundreths of a second, so there is no way to determine who won. Also, they can't have them ski again because then you could blame any difference on exhaustion from the previous race, conditions, etc. Because of this, they have (a few times), given out dual gold medals and not given a bronze. Please don't start another cold war here. Both Canadian and Russian skaters did well. None of them deserved this scandal, and they are not guilty for all this judgement crap. I think giving them both gold medals was a wise decision. How do you know that they KNEW they didn't deserve the gold? Nah, bullet in the head, and then leave the rotting corpse in the middle of the rink so that every time a skater passes it, the judges are reminded not to screw up anymore.
