I got a personal website for my kids, where I upload photos of them for my friends and family. Now Is it better to have own domain or upload the photos to Flickr? BTW, Anybody got invitation to Flickr Pro? ;)

Own domain: You have to install or write your own photo sharing software. You also have to pay for hosting, bandwidth (if you use too much of it), and your domain. Flickr.com: $24.95/year gets you a *lot*[^]. I'm not a Flickr Pro user, so I don't know the exact capabilities. I'd say that unless you need strict control over some aspect of your site, then Flickr Pro would be the best way to go. Kant wrote: Anybody got invitation to Flickr Pro? What does that do? I use Flickr. Otherwise I'd have to get a bunch of software and install it on my hosting so that friends could browse albums, leave comments and do searches like they can do on Flickr. Also friends have signed up for Flickr and are adding their own photos. After every weekend I get a stack of photos of what they have been up to and there is usually a flurry of fun comments as everyone catches up. Alternatively you could store your photos on flickr and then use a plug-in for your own domains blogging software. >BTW, Anybody got invitation to Flickr Pro? I subscribe to a number of the groups' RSS feeds so I can see stuff I am interested in. I then get my pedantic hat on and tell people that it is "Princes Street" and not "Princess Street" and so on. :-O Actually, some of the fun things are seeing what tourists think of Scotland. It is very interesting to get an outsider's view as it makes you think about things in a different light. That is also one of the reasons why I enjoy showing people around Edinburgh. [EDIT] Odd how my reply to Paul ended up here [/EDIT]

Well, I just wrote a stupid perl script to list off pic files in a directory and tack some html around em. It ain't that tricky... So when I have a new batch of photos, I - make a dir, copy the photos to it - make a t (thumbnail) subdir and copy the photos to it - resize stuff for web size in the regular dir, and thumbnail size in the t dir (via that microsoft powertoy pic resizer thingy) - run the little perl script - ftp up the pic dir and the new set of html pages. (one html page per batch of pics) - delete any ooold pic dirs when I run out of space See http://shazware.com/pic[^] If you really need it (it ain't pretty) I can send you the perl script (pc based perl - that activestate perl thingy or whatever)

Or try this Lussumo File Browser. put your pictures in the same folder as the FileBrowser or a sub folder and let it do all the work. It even has a utiliy to create the thumbnails. I use it on my site.

Why not have both? You can use Flickr to host the photos and you can use your own domain to display them. You also get to be part of a community on Flickr which you may or may not want. If you don't want you can just set the default privacy to "private" so no one can see your photos unless they know the exact URL to the raw image.

I like the 'private' option. With my own site I have to provide userid/pwd for people I know so that I can stop outsiders. But that doesn't stop outsiders to break-in.

Oh c'mon Jon, you never got that look from Kelly's dad? Considering what album that's in (looks like his daughter's going to a dance), that's clearly the "You do anything with my daughter that I don't like and I'll kill you" look. :-D Which, by the way, is one of the main reasons I want to have a baby girl one day. I totally want a chance to be that prospective-father-in-law that all guys dread. :-D

After every weekend I get a stack of photos of what they have been up to and there is usually a flurry of fun comments as everyone catches up. Yes, I quite like the community aspect of Flickr.

It would be OK, though half of our database records had 'Princess Close' making it difficult to find records. Why didn't sombody make this a unique/primary key :((
