A New Approach to Virus Prevention
-
A long time ago, a killer could just walk into a store, and buy a horrible automatic gun, walk out, and begin to kill children. And, consequently, many lives were lost. Then, people who wanted to own sporting firearms were made to fill out pages of worthwile papers, and get background checks, when buying firearms. That has cut down on crime, and saved the precious lives of so many children. Then, there was the assault weapons ban, which further cut down on crime, until armed assault was almost nonexistent. The day that sensible law went out of affect, killers were lined up at the stores of wreckless gun dealers, eager to get their insturments of death so they could kill women and children again. Considering the current problem with viruses, shouldn't programmers have to fill out forms saying that they are not going to write viruses, and get background checks to get their development software? And, shouldn't streamlined development programs which show the method's declarations when typing, and attempt to finish your lines of code be banned, just as guns with rapid fire magazines and pistol grip stocks were? I think that this would greatly reduce the virus problem.

How? Shouldn't we also fill out the forms to buy a garden hose because it can be used to strangle someone? Perhaps also for Cameras which are the tool for pornography (child or otherwise). Perhaps even for a hammer, or duct tape since a hammer is a weapon, and duct tape can be used as a restraint. Of course a belt can be used for restraint too, and a jacket. Your laundry detergent can be used as a poison, especially a bleach, so lets fill out the forms for that too. A piece of wood can be wittled into a deadly spike, and auto bow-struts can be turned into swords, so we need to fill out the forms for trees and auto-parts as well. The problem is that dev tools are designed for and used for mostly decent activity, good could be debated, but the vast majority are just doing a job. Do you arrest me for developing a "living encryption" (self modifying code) as a security system for shareware because it was turned into one of the worst polymorphic viruses of the early 90's? Somewhere there is the decision on intent. In the last case a virus writing guild in Australia was responsible, and I donated a lot of time to the anti-virus industry to help fight the portion that was my own creation. I don't think signing agreements on dev tools could in anyway change the virus problem. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Surely you aren't serious. Did you really register for this site just to post this one post? Are you even a programmer? First off, you're not really comparing writing a computer virus to killing kids, are you? That's a real leap. There's quite a difference between destruction of property and loss of life. And comparing an IDE to an automatic weapon is laughable. Second, you think that banning IDEs is going to help? I'm sure that once I got used to it, I could use notepad just as effectively as I could use Visual Studio. (Not as efficiently, but that's another matter.) And you're saying we should restrict access to compilers to people who have had background checks? What exactly is that background check going to turn up? I wouldn't suspect that most virus writers have had a long history of criminal behavior. I know that I would, for sure, pass a background check right now, and then I could turn around and compile some uber-virus tomorrow and wipe out half the internet. (Exaggerating, of course, but you get my point.) And what about Open Source IDEs and OSes? Or are we supposed to get background checks to download free software now? This is, perhaps, the most ridiculous thing I've heard in quite a while. You get a 1.
Picture a huge catholic cathedral. In it there's many people, including a gregorian monk choir. You know, those who sing beautifully. Then they start singing, in latin, as they always do: "Ad hominem..." -Jörgen Sigvardsson

"Sarah Brady" was a White House press secretary and gun activist for whom the "Brady Law" was named. This is obviously an NRA troll who is peeved that he can't easily buy an AK47 anymore to shoot squirrels and coke-cans in the back yard so he is fishing for our sympathy by trying to make us realize how we would suffer if the same unfair restrictions applied to our dangerous dev tools. False.

Even more false. The preferred weapon is the same as the police use - a 9mm pistol.

It would have exactly the same effect as gun control - none whatsoever, other than to disarm the victims. It suffers from the same faulty thinking, that the criminal and ammoral people in society will abide by the law. Only those who would never dream of writing malicious code will register. Nice troll, though...;) "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9

You got it right! I posted that so maybe some of you could see how stupid gun control really is.

Wow! Thanks. I'm definitely convinced now. Just to think I never ever would have learned this if you hadn't barged into a software development message board not knowing anyone here and not having any credibility at all and shared this brilliant insight with us. You are so convincing. Your methods so perfect your desires so pure.:zzz::zzz: YAAAAAAWN!!! Go back to killing chipmunks with your pocket knife okay? Good!

Pointers, memory maps, marshalling data across process boundaries writing bridge code in assembler to align interfaces. You know the normal stuff that gets talked about on software development message boards. What are you talking about, I forget already?:->

Not anti-gun at all. I live in Idaho. Here guns are given for birthday presents. I think what has me annoyed is your method. I think I would have respected you a lot had you just brought up gun control and wanted to know what people thought about it. I would have told you that it's almost as affective as just leaving automatic weapons lying on the curb. I think gun control works about as well as the drunk driver campaigns work. You touched on a nerve with your method. That and a real knucklehead has been here lately causing several annoyances by registering a different username each time and then posting a bunch of garbage. I think I would have respected you and *possibly* participated had you taken a different approach. But I'm not anti-gun at all. A *very* long way from it to be sure.:rose:
