Not complaining--Just curious

Ouch. I hadn't intended to open a big ole "Can 'o Worms" with my question.

You did not, there has been lots and lots of talk about CP and performance lately ;) So this is just the sequel to all that... - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!" ShotKeeper, my Photo Album / Organizer Application[^]

They could give you their tools and it wouldn't cost them a dime! That's really inexcusable. I thought the same thing, and I was supposed to receive a Dundas.NET Chart component, which seemed a very good tool. My intention was to make a nice tool with it and publish an article right away, which would obviously benefit them. Not to mention that I'm still waiting for the T-shirt to arrive... :( If you check the link on the message, you'll see two other "prize winners" that also didn't receive their prizes... For obvious reasons I didn't follow up sending Chris a ton of "where's my T-shirt" e-mails... Yes, even I am blogging now!

IMHO the competition stuff is a joke, and no one really cares. It have NO visibility, and I know several people that said it was impossible to find stuff about the competitions, and how they work. Also, I offered some software I have made, to Chris, that he could use as prizes in the competitions, but he turned the offer down with a "We only want developer products as prizes". Huh! If I won I would love any software that might be usefull, not only developer products... As it is now, I suggest they shut down the competition stuff, and turn it back on sometime when they have time/resources to fully support it! And now I'll watch the flames when people see this post ;) - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!" ShotKeeper, my Photo Album / Organizer Application[^]

Why did you and Marc create the RealDevs site? Why should I want to use the site when Codeproject exists? Regards, Björn Morén Stockholm, Sweden
We wanted our own site, and we wanted to do it different from CP. We have a more moderated environment, where articles are reviewed before they are posted and stuff like that. I'm not saying we are better or worse than other sites, I just hope we are a bit different ;) - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!" You didn't even get the Dundas stuff? This means that they kinda pulled out, I mean, its just to send some software in an email X| I would love to hear what David has to say about this, but well, I guess we will never know. - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!" I've all but given up trying to get anything out of them so if you send me your T-shirt size and address I'll send you a consolation prize. Now that seriously blows. You're about the 5th person (including me) in the last week who's reported to have been blown off when offering help. Like you, I really enjoy this site and hope it gets back on track soon. Tom Archer wrote: You're about the 5th person (including me) in the last week who's reported to have been blown off when offering help I like to think that when I say "no thanks" I'm not blowing people off. If someone offers help then how, in practice, do I take them up on the offer? Send someone I've never met the codebase and DB schema? Ask them to build new components? Fly someone in to look after our network and hardware? Ask people to ask their bosses to advertise on CodeProject? Daniel T offered help a while back and gave me some great feedback on a specific problem. Going deeper than that is very, very difficult because getting help from volunteers is a very hit and miss affair. I've had some amazing help from volunteers such as Uwe and the editors, but I've also invested a lot of time in trying to set things up so others can help and in some cases it's put me behind. And then what happens when that volunteer decides they are owed money or part ownership of what we have? Or if a volunteer suddenly runs out of time because of home or work life? Or they break something and don't want to hang around to fix it? Or they do worse? The bad 0.01% of the population has really made me once bitten, twice shy. This sucks. The cleanest way for this to work is if we have dedicated people who are under an employment agreement and can work to a set deadline. Anything else can turn good friends into angry and bitter enemies. You spent enough time with CodeGuru to understand how hard this can be, and you have also been in the programming business to understand how hard it is to try and have goals and timelines that rely on others who are not under the same set of pressures. I would LOVE, more than anything, to use the combined talent of our community to build something amazing, but it just opens us up to too many issues and can be, indrectly, very, very expensive. cheers, Chris Maunder

Sorry for the late response to this.... Was a Dundas Chart the prize you won, or was it a replacement prize? In Chris's response posted above it seems that it was a replacement prize. Please email and let me know the details of this! If you are indeed owed a copy of the Dundas Chart I will ensure that you get your copy. Troy Marchand VP Product Development Dundas Software
