I think the joke is not that funny, knowing someone who chose a similar demise should have nothing to do with it. If someone close to me fell down and became paralyzed for life, does that mean I cannot laugh at the next person who falls down in a funny way?

It lost more than that in translation - most of it makes little sense in English.

No offense to the poster, but we get this all the time at clutchcity.net (a basketball web site). As Yao Ming (Chinese) is our most popular player, many Chinese post there and try to translate their jokes to English. As anyone who speaks more than one language can tell you, it's extremely difficult to translate jokes unless you're absolutely fluent in both languages. Hence, absolutely noone understands the jokes and the bad translation becomes the joke. Therefore, this joke might have been funny in Chinese, but obviously doesn't translate well.
