CP Animated Smileys
-
I've recently noticed that none of the CP smileys are getting animated when reading posts in the forums. They're all animating when writing a post (yeah, I can see the laughing smiley laughing as I write this post), but none of them are animating when reading posts. Check if they're animating on your browser:  ;P ;) :omg: :wtf: :-O [Edit]They're animating on the preview button, and animating as I posted this message. But they stopped animating after I hide the message (by clicking on the title bar) and show it again.[/Edit] They're fine when I use IE 6.0, but not when I'm using FF 1.0.6. Any ideas of what's happening? PS: CP's smileys are my favourites from all the forums I've seen. Edbert P. Sydney, Australia -- modified at 20:04 Sunday 13th November, 2005

I used FF for a while - but got back to using IE. IE might me buggy and have a bad reputation and all that, but it looks good on my eyes and loads faster than any other browser since it shares code with Windows Explorer, and so is already loaded into memory by the time the system is usable.

Marc and Nish are being naysayers just because they don't know about webdev. ;P Anyway, this happens with IE too sometimes. You may need to clear out your cache. In Firefox, go to Tools->Options->Privacy and where you see the Cache item, click its "Clear Now" button. Also, you should probably update to 1.0.7 as there's a security fix that you're missing. And if you're adventurous enough, you can always try out Firefox 1.5 Release Candidate 2. :)

I'm using Firefox 1.5 RC 2 and all is well with the smileys. I've only been using it for a few days but have been happy with this release so far. Chris LaQuerre eBusiness Projects Leader The statement below is true. The statement above is false.

Yeah. I hear it's really nice. I've been using Firefox trunk nightly builds forever, so I haven't checked out the 1.5 branch, but I hear rumors that it's more stable than my current trunk nightlies are. ;P

Yeah, I know there has been critical updates. It's just that I usually wait for a while until all the extensions I use work with the latest release. I don't use FF I installed at work for any critical things like banking so I'm not too concerned. Upgrading FF is still PITA in my opinion :boo:, and the last time I installed night-build along with a stable version it broke my stable version. :sigh: The smileys problem still occur though, it only happens when (I'm assuming) setting division uuh, in this case a TD style to none and then displaying it again. I knew it was still working until a recent update to CP site. And no, it's not firefox config nor ZoneAlarm (I don't use ZA at work, we have Novell Border Manager). Anybody else has this problem? Well, I've been developing a web application and I can say both can equally drive me nuts :-D I can say that IE performs poorly compared to FF when it comes to complex Javascript event handling (not calculation as some people have proved IE is faster). There are several hacks on the net to run FF faster, I think. However, the reason I moved from IE to FF is not its performance but the loads of useful extensions it offers and the user-friendliness (I love tabs, love middle-click to open link on new tabs or to close tabs, mouse gestures, etc). Yeah. You're never supposed to use the same profile with nightlies and stables. The update system has been thoroughly overhauled in 1.5 though, so it won't be a PITA any longer. :) What extensions do you have installed? I know that AdBlock+ has caused problems for me with images before.

Not really. I could see how you would use MyXaml with ASP.NET, but the main application for it is WinForms stuff.

I have the same problem too. :( I use v1.0.4. Maybe David has a point - I'll try upgrading. Let me know if you overcome the problem, and I'll do the same. :) Cheers, Vikram.

They are shy. They are OK when you are just previewing or concentrating on what you are writing and not staring at them directly, but once in a message they get a bit of stage fright and freeze up. Give 'em a break, OK? cheers, Chris Maunder

I have the same problem with 1.0.6. In 1.5 b2 they are working fine, but the Quote Selected Text button isn't working.

I can confirm this. With your message open, if I open the Reply link in a background tab, the smileys in your message start animating. When I collapse and then reopen your message they stop. Doesn't bother me really, animated gifs are annoying at the best of times.

I've been using it too. The only thing I'm annoyed at is the misrendering of the menubar. See how it wobbles when you select a menu? Not a big deal, but annoying nonetheless. :) --

MyXaml is a generic object markup parser and instantiator, and as such, it can instantiate any .NET object that has a parameterless public constructor - including web controls. But it has nothing directly to do with web dev. Marc can do some web dev, but it's certainly not one of his areas of expertise - he mainly leaves that to me. :-D

David "Bleeding Edge" Stone. :-D --
Totally. :-D For instance, they're working on a lot of the parsing code for CSS and HTML right now in the trunk builds, so some of the CSS rules are totally screwed up. As such, Gmail is completely unusable in the nice AJAXy view. So I've had to resort to the basic HTML view. And it's either Greasemonkey or CPhog, but one of the two has completely stopped working, so I'm typing this reply in the normal reply page. You live on the bleeding edge, you learn to deal with getting cut. ;)

Of course not. The icons know the bar is so low, that even they are better looking, more useful, and more secure than IE.
