I would like to format all my windows 2003 web servers and install some useful , easy to handle and easy to maintain OS like Linux on them. :( -My Linux,Apache,PHP,MYSQL solutions work with nearly no maintanance. :) -My Windows 2003,IIS,SQL Server, asp.net solutions always having problems. :(( Everyday something new and stupid happens on this M$ maschines. Just now the SMTP service on one of the maschines is broken. I did not change anything. :(( And I have to maintain this crap with a very slow connection. The servers are 13.000 kilometers away. Welcome in the third world. :(( Chris ;) Vietiane Laos (PDR)

Sounds like there something is either misconfigured, 3rd party software is acting up, or a hardware failure. It also sounds like your pissed off and blaming Microsoft for your problems. Matt Newman

No I did not piss something of. The problem is that with my slow connection it is so damn difficult to check something. Take the events. I need 10 minutes to check some events, becouse of slow connection. It takes ages to open an enterprice manager. It is just not visible to control a windows 2003 remotely in case the connection is no good. How much nicer is it if you just ftp your logfiles and check them offline for example. Or download the httpd.conf and work offline as well. Do everything with ssh is the way to go. Not to fuzz around with some remote desktop. It just doesn't work if the connection is no good. What I need is complete control with minimum connectivity. It seems M$ does not provide that. I already use osql and other command line tools when visible. But the cmd.exe is slow as hell too. Sometimes I need 30 Seconds just to enter one character. Sure, the problem is our slow Thai Service provider I am using. But I can't change this for the timebeeing. Then use query analyser.

So, why don't you? It would be perfectly possible for SQL Server to dump its event logs into a text file. Which you can then FTP. Heck, you could dump all the event logs on the server to a text file if you wanted to.

Wait... This command prompt is via a remote desktop, or you are doing it locally transmitting it to the server? If the former then do the latter, if the latter then do you really think a linux system will be any faster.

Then quit pounding on Microsoft for problems that aren't theirs. Jeez, if you are going to blame someone else for your problems then at least blame the right organisation. Chris said; "the problem is our slow Thai Service provider I am using" There are alternatives, IPStar, but quite expensive [3500 Baht a month for 256/128 service on basic plan, other plans available]. I used their service for 3 1/2 years and can say that the service was good and they were responsive when there were problems. There is a one time set up charge as well. I don't know how much it is these days because I set up when it was higher before Thaicom II was launched. I am currently using a land line provided by TOT [just introduced into the village for the first time in July 2548] and really miss the faster service but could not justify the cost now that there is an alternative. For business purposes there would be no question about service providers. For personal use I just couldn't justify the cost. I'm on-line therefore I am. JimmyRopes

Not everyone uses the Gregorian/Common Era calendar. Thailand's is based on the birth of Buddha, not of Christ, and therefore this year is 2549 in the Thai calendar. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder
