Hereditry unfortunately, we're mostly of Pommy stock. Much like Americans are decended from religious wackos kicked out of Europe, that's why envagelists work so well over there as well as cults. Michael Martin Australia "I controlled my laughter and simple said "No,I am very busy,so I can't write any code for you". The moment they heard this all the smiling face turned into a sad looking face and one of them farted. So I had to leave the place as soon as possible." - Mr.Prakash 24/04/2004

When I click on a post to view it, it expands as normal, but the bottom of the post centers itself on the bottom of my screen, not the top of the post on the top of the screen as before... Anyone else getting this?
It's not so bad - if you're reading from bottom to top.

Because it makes the most common case - reading forward through a thread - difficult. The old way went like this:
- Click a subject line.
- Look at the top of the browser window to find the top of the post. The post always started in the same physical location on the screen, so this was easy to do.
- Read the post.
- Move the mouse down to the next subject line. Click it.
- Repeat as I go through the thread.
Now it goes like this, with pain points in bold:
- Click a subject line
- Figure out where the top of the post is. Since the post is bottom-aligned in the window, the top of the post isn't in a predictable place.
- Read the post.
- Scroll the window to find the next subjct line. Click it.
- Repeat and get annoyed as I go through the thread.

I think it should reposition so that at least the next post or next few posts are clickable without scrolling unless that would push the open post off the screen. I think that is what is irking everyone. It is annoying to have to scroll to a link that was visible before the expand. I never really minded because I'm getting all the other CPHog goodness. Except for having to disable CPHog because the quick post always gets The operation failed unexpectedly without fail, it is working great.

You know, (and I say this with all possible respect), for a global community who shows up primarily to get "something for nothing", you guys sure do whine a lot about the quality of your free services. :-D Christopher Duncan Practical Strategy Consulting Author of The Career Programmer Unite the Tribes
OK, this is bullshit I see all the time on the net and I'm calling you on it. The fact that something is offered for free does not mean that its users can't complain, criticize, or yes even whine about it. Taking the stance "it's free, shut up and like it" shows huge disrespect for the users, without whom there would be no site at all.

No fun doing this stuff if nobody does. :-D I'm an American, which means that I was raised in a culture that tells me I have a right to bitch and moan about most anything I like. Part of the reason for this is the feeling that criticism can be constructive and lead to better things, and often times this is true. By the same token, gratitude for the efforts of others isn't entirely out of the question. I guess I'm just becoming weary of the growing sense of entitlement I see, both in my own country and on the Internet. The only real fix is to adopt a real message forum setup. I realize Chris, etc al., worked their collective butts off on this, but frankly, there's better stuff out there.

I haven't been able to use what used to be the quick post feature in the beta version for a few days now from any of the 3 systems that I use it on.

Good, clear write-up, Mike. I hadn't looked at it that way, as i usually click once to open and then again to close a post before moving on to the next one.

I didn't get what you are saying. I can read the all messages. May be I have to scroll bit more to read other messages. Is that what you are complaining of? [Quick Reply][Reply][Email][View Thread][Get Link][Bookmark]

Though adding a next post link somewhere near the title would make it even easier.

Kant wrote:

No. It's not a bit more, It's a astronomicall amount more. Which is very annoying. Depending which machine I am on, I don't necessarily have a scroll wheel capacity, so I have to drag the scroll bar. That is extremely annoying.

It's not my fault, and I'm not changing my code to compensate.

I think it's because your user name is the same as the that of the mascot, and on their planet, they prefer to read web sites like that.

Possibly because he is a distant relative. Unfortunatly some of us are crosseyed from the rest and prefer to read webpages top-down instead of bottom-up. :) [btw, this is a joke :) ]

Extraordinarily irritating, isn't it? Since I'm stuck with a laptop with no mouse or wheel, I find it as useful a feature as a safety bar on a gas mower to a one-armed gardener. "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9

Well, i'm assuming you're all just complaining because it takes a few hours to fully comprehend how insanely great this behavior actually is... But just for the heck of it, here's a little more information:
- I put this method of expanding messages into CPhog something like a year ago, as the existing method of expanding messages was really getting on my nerves. Apologies to the well-trained muscle memory that makes you think the old way was ever a good idea, but making something move out of the way when you click on it is nothing but a dirty trick.
- I'd offered the code to Chris on various occasions, as there have been complaints about this behavior in Suggestions and elsewhere, and for some reason not everyone wants to take the time to install my little hacks.
- What finally prompted me to cleanup the code and make it suitable for use on the site was this annoying "feature" of the Mozilla-specific code on CP: if the forum didn't load completely, clicking any message subjects would reload the entire page. Using code that works for both IE and FF fixed this nicely.
- So i badgered Chris non-stop until the site was updated. So Chris kindly agreed to update the site.
Frankly, it doesn't matter too much to me if the old or new message behavior is used site-wide (as i'll use my own script if it doesn't) so long as #3 stays fixed.
