Ok, I will admit it, I applied a budget constraint and only spent a thousand dollars but I have ordered my new PC. I will assembly it when it arrives. I am so excited! To be honest I have never built a PC from scratch for my own personal use :( I am so looking forward to popping this cherry. The specs are lame but I will share them anyway: Processor: Intel P940 RAM: 2GB Paired 667 Video: 7600 GT HDD: 2 WD 160GB 7k with 16meg buffer to be RAID 0 PS: 550 Antec (prolly overkill but I may replace the video card) With any luck it may actually be able to run windows vista when it is released. (BTW, I got all my software dirt cheap and legally!)

I had a similar phone call the other day. A customer called me and said "The Login button doesn't show anymore. It disappeared after the thunderstorm!". :~

That depends on your viewpoint. In terms of the bragging that often goes on in the lounge ;) then you're probably correct. In terms of the vast majority of people here then we can only dream of such a system :^) Graham

I know this is true. I've heard it repeated a million times. I've been messing around inside PC's for ~18 years now and I have to admit that I don't really take very careful precautions, yet I've never had anything pop on me. Trust me, I've spent a LOT of time inside PC's. The biggest precaution I take is that, when possible I leave the PC plugged in while I mess with it so that the chasis is grounded. This isn't always possible though and still I've never destroyed anything due to ESD. The last prebuilt desktop PC I owned I purchased in 1996, and even that was customized pretty quickly. I've built them for friends, for work, continuous upgrades at home... never any problems. Hell, half the time I lay the things down on carpet to work on it. Has anyone here had lots of ESD trouble?

All it takes is for you to touch the case before doing anything and that leaves you pretty well covered. Some people with dry skin for example have lots of problems so there is luck invovled. Elaine :rose:

Wearing a nylon shirt and stroking a cat just before doing the work is a bad idea too... (of course, some would say wearing a nylon shirt at any time is a bad idea)

With ATX power supplies you have to make sure you've got the switch on the power supply flipped off if you have it plugged in. Otherwise, there is power to the mainboard and possibly some other components as well.

Back in the day, I once added a CP/M 80-column card to an Apple IIe - while the computer was powered on. I got lucky and nothing bad happened. Yup, that's what I do, along with not pushing my luck (I handle all cards by their non-conductive edges).

According to all the rumors, the components you've listed are sufficient. I have two power supplies in my system - one (450 watt) for components that have rotating assemblies, and a 500 watt for the motherboard and video card. If you get a big enough case, you can do that too if you're worried about power.

It is if by 'graphics' you mean 'smaller letters'. :)

Back in the day, I once added a CP/M 80-column card to an Apple IIe - while the computer was powered on. I got lucky and nothing bad happened. More on-topic: I've been messing around wit computer innards since 1979, and I've never destroyed anything as a result of static electricity, and that even includes the days when you added memory one chip at a time. -- modified at 12:59 Wednesday 2nd August, 2006

Yeah I agree, I've been messing with chips and computers as a hobby since at least as long as you and professionally for many years and I've never seen a card or component fried by static. I think it was probably a bigger worry back in the 8080 days than it is now. In various computer service shops I've seen many memory chips and components that are taken for spare parts heaped in boxes without esd bags and never seen a bad one as a result either. We even used to take hard drives that had died and threw them in a freezer for a few hours to recover data off of them.
