I was misled by the "I have a doubt" phrase which is a typical non-native speaker's usage. The disguise was excellent, Judah :-)

I've had my share of exposure to Indians (have worked with some, and I help out in the C# forum) so I can pick up on the funny things said by non-native English speakers. :) The name Sharada Ulhas is a female name. I did a little research with the name: Sharada is a Hindi name with a meaning of "goddess of knowledge/learning", and Ulhas has a meaning of laughter and comedy. So it works out nicely. :)

Cool - so there was a good bit of research behind the joke. Impressive :-)

Hey guys, Could you suggest the spec for a machine that'd run Vista Beta smoothly? Specifically the video card. We are trying to put together a machine for testing out Vista.

THere are still a couple hiccups running Vista b2 (sleep/suspend/hibernate don't always work, wired NIC doesn't work) but it's nothing that I can't work around until later builds of Vista fix them.

Thanks Mike. But isn't that a laptop? I was looking for a desktop.

If you don't care too much about the Aero Glass interface, the beta runs just fine under VMWare. VMWare server is free, and Workstation is not very expensive. We use the workstation version, so that we can do the snapshots, which are REALLY good for testing installs. David
Yes, it seemed to run fine for me under MS Virtual Machine 2005 with the exception that after the last reboot (during installation) it lost reference to my network card. Couldn't figure out how to get it back. Strange thing is the network card was available under Vista when it first ran (during installation). A subsequent reboot resulted in it's lost reference. Trying to force a driver install didn't work and it would not automatically determine that a network card was available. Works fine with XP Pro over top MS Virtual Machine 2005.

Hi Nish I've got a Pentium 4 HT 2.8GHZ, 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9700 card, and it's been running Vista with no problems. I recently upgraded to 2 GB of RAM and hardly noticed a speed increase.

As I had a problem running Vista under MS Virtual Machine 2005, I created a 32 Meg partition (which also has Office 2007 installed with space to spare) and installed it there. I have a Pentium 4 2.6 Ghz (no HT), 1 Gig Ram, Nvidia GT6600 PCIe (128 Meg SDRAM), ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe Motherboard. Vista works great even with the Aero interface. -- modified at 14:13 Saturday 19th August, 2006

Currently working on C++/CLI in Action for Manning Publications. Also visit the Ultimate Toolbox blog (New)I read an article sometime ago that stated there would be significant performance problems when using the Aero interface as there are no Video cards presently on the market that can handle multple applications simultaneously using the GPU. The Aero interface apparently makes heavy use of the GPU on your Video card. In this article, it was stated that Microsoft had initiated a request to all the video card manufacturers to produce a video card with this capability. I am running the Aero interface on an ASUS NVidia GT6600 and it seems to work fine with the exception that I have not tried any apps that make use of 3D rendering. I think this is where the problem might occur. If you do a search on the Net for "Aero" and "video performance" you may be able to find the same article. I also just read that Vista Beta 1 did not contain a 3D Aero interface and that this was to be added into Vista Beta 2 so maybe this is why I haven't experienced any performance problems. So, it might be advisable not to spend a lot of money on a video card quite yet and wait until these new cards are available. As well, some of the newer cards are starting to have physics processing in hardware which would be nice for gaming (although it only seems to work if the game takes advantage of this new hardware).

I've got a Pentium 2.8GHZ, 1GB RAM, GForce4 and works fine, Minimum HD dysk size is 12Gb to install , (system takes arount 5Gb after install , but requires extra space for temporary files Chris
:suss::cool:Hey guys, my IT group got Vista running on the following machines: Duron 1.6 30 Gig hard drive 512 Ram 128 Gforce 5500 Pentium 1.4 20 Gig hard drive 768 Ram 256 Gforce 6500 Celeron 1.8 40 Gig hard drive 512 Ram 128 Gforce 5500 Athlon 1800 XP 30 Gig hard drive 512 Ram 128 Gforce 5500 They all run with areo glass effects and we have not had a problem with any of the machines. We also loaded office live on them and the users seem to be working with little problem. Instead of going high end, my cohorts went lowest common machine with a few upgrades. This is what we have learned: - Anything above 1 ghz processor works. it may be slow on some tasks - Video card with at least 128 meg of RAM. You can run without the areo glass stuff, but if you want to full effect, I suggest a higher end card in a older machine will make a world of difference. - RAM. 512 is bare minimum. You will get some disk spin if you are multi-tasking items because of running out of ram. - expect 6 to 11 gig for operating system & swap file. So a hard disk of 20 gig is barely making it. 40 Gig for an average user doing documentation and daily items. Hope this is informative.
