Jeremy, it may just need to be focused, it might be doable. As far as recommending you do it, nah, call around for a tv or computer repair place. If they have a tech that knows CRTs, then that person should know how to SAFELY refocus the beams. Underneath that cover lives many kilovolts of excitement you do not want to have.

If it's something that can be adjusted, then it's worth some phone calls assuming it's not too pricey.

Hey, you haven't lived until you have been electrocuted a few times. I've only gotten a jolt once while working on one of my brother's PCs, and that was enough for me.

IANAMG (nor do I play one on TV). That said, my guess is that if the problem is just now surfacing, the monitor is going south on you. And given your geographic location, that means it's going to get very wet in the process. Never a good thing for electronic devices. Unfortunately, we live in a disposable society. Those who wish to repair rather than replace are rewarded for their greenishness by paying as much or more than it would cost to simply buy a new unit. As such, the latter would be my recommendation. Besides, you know you've been lusting after those sexy flat screen monitors anyway. Go ahead. Do it. You know you want to. (Inspired by images of Jeffry's "devil on the shoulder"). :-D

I realize this is a cheap shot, so I'm not taking it seriously. But I'm not playing outside of my own standards here. I'm willing to say the word "crap" in front of my little kid sister or daughter. On a side note, the things people just justify here just so they talk about sexual stuff in the lounge just amazes me actually. I would say more on that, but ya know, the kid sister rule.

Its as bad as any other four letter word. Just goes to show everyone has a differnt idea of what is offensive, something to consider next time you want to wave the 'kid sister' rule around :)

It's called a "kid sister" rule. I think it's pretty easy to understand what goes and what doesn't. Something to consider the next time someone feels the need to not use the soapbox to express themselves.

Ok, I have had a Philips 201B4[^] (phlips.com seems to be down currently) as my main monitor for around 3 years now (not really that old IMO). Yeah, I'm still stuck in CRT land. :-D A few months ago it started getting extremely blurry. Normally I'd think I'm going blind except my second cheapo monitor is still clear (go figure). No matter what setting I choose the stupid thing is still blurry as ever. So, please tell me there's a monitor guru out there can give me a clue? Is it the aperture or something I can adjust (I vaguely even know what that is), or is there any hope? Or, is it time to make Mr. Monitor meet Mr. Trashcan? Because after months of staring at this blurry thing I think I'm ready to throw it against the wall. Any advice by the knowledgeable ones is greatly appreciated.

It's easy to solve! In the past I did reparation of this stuff. Some things to know: -Do it carefully! -Don't touch electronic parts -If you open the case, do not put the monitor on metal parts! (screws) -use correct screwdriver (isolated) How to: -Open he case -Put the monitor stable -Power on, wait 15 minutes (to heat up and got electronic parts stable. -If you look at the back, you see normal on the right or left side a big black box with a cable to the monitor (do NOT touch, high voltage) - Near this black or on the black box you see two trims, one of this is "Focus". -Turn this one with screw driver, use mirror to see the tube results. The bad news: -This will no solve the problem perm., a lot of philips CRTs has this problems! This is becasue the electronic parts are changing from value during cold and warm. Finding the incorrect part is not easy. Good luck!

Well the fact that its debated regularly, like now, shows that this is not the case. Not everyone has the same set of values as you Jeremy.

I have a Samsung 20.1 " monitor, and I swear by it.  In fact, I have two.  One has a dead scanline, and I got a replacement by warranty, and they've totally failed to come and pick up the old one, it's just sitting in a box on my floor.

Well no, it was a joke that died and failed miserably. Jeff was acting like SO's would be banging on his door and then you acted like you're meeting him when knocking on his door. I guess I need to revamp my subtle humor tactics. :-D

actually both comments were subtle that they passed right by each other.... but I got a kick out of the confusion. "But whats puzzling you Is the nature of my game"

Either that, or I'm just more dense than usual today, which is, unfortunately, all too believable...

I find this really hard to believe, but I'm gonna just have to take your word on it obviously. On an aside, to you think the term "bloody hell" is more or less offensive (no, I'm not offended by it, just curious)?

Fine, I'll make a point to not use it anymore in the lounge if you're really do find it offensive. It is just that simple.
